Plug wires, accel supresion core.. will these work?
« on: June 30, 2007, 10:10:26 AM »
I got a set of universal Accel super stock wires kit # 3011 they were on sale and I did not look into it too much. I wanted to replace the wires on my '76 750. After looking at the wires, it seems the radio supression core is not a copper core, guess I am not keeping up with technology. Will these still work with the stock coils and plug boots?...
thanks for anyone's help,

Depends on what you define "work" to be.
Can you still get a spark at the plugs?  Probably.
Can you solder to the Accell wires core conductor?  I don't know. I expect probably not.
Will the overall ignition resistance be higher than it should?  yes.
Can you jam square pegs into a round hole?  Yes, if you are determined enough.

You could try measuring the resistance of the approximate length needed for the plug wires. Honda put on 10K caps I think, so if the wire resistance is around 10K and you use non-resistor caps and plugs you will be pretty much the same resistance as original. I use 5K caps and metal wire with no problem, metal wire and non-resistor caps work OK too I've heard. I've had high full throttle - high RPM missing when running resistor plugs with 10K caps, so I wouldn't recommend going much over 10K per wire.
You can't solder to the graphite saturated string/fiberglass core of suppression wires.

I am just going to return them and look for some copper core "racing" wires. I am behind the times and thought most wires had a copper core and just had diffrent insulators...... Another lesson learned   ::)

Go with the DYNA solid copper wires.  You can get them from Z-1 Enterprises.  Price is reasonable.  But....if you have the stock coils, you might have a problem getting the wires to mate-up with the coils.  I have the DYNA coils, so it wasn't an issue.
