URGENT PLEASE HELP, HEAD BOLTS CL350
« on: June 30, 2007, 06:54:24 PM »
Hi guys, i just got my CL350 home and the previous owner just replaced the headgasket, now after riding the bike home i notice it is dripping a little bit from the head gasket, like a drip every 10 seconds, now i called him and he says that its a 2 step procedure for torqueing down the head.

Is this true ? he said now that its been run i should tighten it down again.

Next question, could someone post a picture of the motor and the location of the headbolts THANK YOU, i want to give them a bit of torque and see if it cures the leak. THANK YOU VERY MUCH

take the valve cover off and have a look - there are probably about 8 to 10 of them - they should not be too hard to find.......
otherwise take a photo of the head with the valve cover removed and someone will point them out for you...

There are 8 head domed nuts on the top of the engine. You got to tighten them up starting from anyone in the center, then the other side crossing, then the one at its side, something like this.

6    2   3   7

8    4   1   5

Sorry I don't have the shop manual with me so I can't give you the correct torque values. If nobody can help you can't go wrong by tightening each 1/8 of a turn or 1/16

It goes a little somethin like dis:

"Install a washer and cap nut on each of the cylinder studs and tighten them gradually and evenly in an "X" pattern, starting from the inside and working out until the proper torque of 13-14.5fl lb.s is reached"

The sequencing according to the service manual is like this:

(front/exhaust side of engine)

8     1     3     5

6     4     2     7

(rear/tranny side)

There ya have it!

With only 9 posts on this forum you should be more patient when expecting answers. People is not online all the time, much less on weekends, and not many people read the "other bikes" forum anyway.

I take from what you said that you are going to retighten only. According to what Steve has transcribed from the manual, take into account that the washers are not regular washers but sealing washers. They crush and seal, because the stud tunnels are used for oil circulation.

Yes i will be patient, problem is that i just brought the bike home and the previous owner did the head gasket 2-3 days ago, and i just need to know if im returning the bike for him to redo the gasket, or if indeed i should just torque the head down some more on my own.

Sorry to hear. I guess it raises the question that although the PO replaced the head gasket, you have no idea with what and how meticulous he was about doing it. :-\
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I would definitely ask him to do it unless he sold the bike to you with the stating that it is 'as is' or if you asked and he said it was fine. A picture would also help!
