XL250S rebuild
« on: June 30, 2007, 06:55:56 PM »
the subject of my dismay 1979 XL250S ..yes I know I should be finishing the 650.
this bolt is stuck, I may not have a hammer big enough to deal with this sucker.
someone please remove it before I    #1 go stark raving mad
                                                    #2 go to pub

victory is mine.
after much staring and poking I cut the sucker either side of the swingarm. it turns out I had no hope of drifting this bolt out, the PO had built up the collar with weld, warping it in the process then bashed the bolt thru with a very large persuader

aaaaaa the joys of an old bike.
today is front fork rebuild time, so the fork seals are going to resist my efforts as usual. the oven is on and they will be heated to 200 degrees in the hope of loosening these suckers.
stay tuned for the next installment   hahahahaha I'm going mad  ;D

well after getting the motor to go(a good start)
new old swing arm bolt, sleeve and bushes made to measure
             rebuilt front end
recovered seat(I'm too old to put up with a wet bum)
new header pipes (twin exhaust ports)
             new handlebars
             cleaned the carby......hehe only one
she starts first kick, idles like a top and goes where I point it. I have given it the first taste of offroad riding and now we are off for a bridge to pub ride this weekend, 1 1/2 hours each way so I hope my trail riding skills haven't diminished with age  ;D

Well done Scunny, have a great ride! I was eyeing off a very clean XL500 Honda at my local wreckers yard on the weekend, and also an old MT250 Elsinore with an alloy tank. Ahhhh, better not, I'm too old to go dirt bike riding, ha ha! :D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

no fishing rod on this trip Sam, that comes out this morning.
bike and rider handled all tasks thrown at them  ;D
I didn't realise how many river crossings there were, but apart from a couple of (moments) in deep sections, all went well

not my falcon Terry, she is a friends sunday car.
well concerned members, on a whim I purchased a 23inch front wheel for the river rocket(this is the stock size) to replace the 21 thats on it. whoever invented the front brake set up was a sadist. I'm no expert but this thing is nuts ???

well the time has come to look into the motor. my trusty steed has been burning a lot of oil and has developed that horrible smell of death.
I've got the head off and the piston has 75 beside the inlet valve relief. I thought oversize went to o.5mm. stock bore is 74mm.

cylinder off, eveything looks good but will have the bore and piston measured by someone less clumsy as me. strange tho, when I pulled the cylinder up I was greeted by that sickly smell from the crankcase. will ponder that one over a beer tonight.
since we all like pics here is one from the last trip

piston and bore measured and in spec. turns out that a 3rd over .75 was made as an after market option, now the hunt for some rings. might see about getting some made.

well 3rd oversize off the shelf rings was a no, nothing , zilch.
so your parts detective went to a engine shop in town and they have a set of car rings that will be good to go after a bit of tweaking. $150 bucks and I get 4 sets  ;D
