tire questions
« on: July 01, 2007, 03:57:32 PM »
Hello all,

I am going to be needing new tires for my 78 CB 550K soon. I recall the PO of my bike saying that he had placed larger tires on the bike. I would like to know what would be the stock size tires for this bike? Also, what is the metric equivalent tire size?

Thanks in advance.

I think that the stock sizes are listed in the FAQ, certainly in the honda repair manual (I assume there's a 550 manual on the site?).

Otherwise, you can measure the width of the inside of the rim and look up the manufacturer's  chart.  That's what I wound up doing-  the PO had put on a non-stock rim with a wider tire.

I think the front is 100/90-19, the rear is a bit smaller than the 750 which is 110/90-18.  I'm running wheels off of a '78 550 on my 750 with the above mentioned tire sizes.

The service data in the Honda Shop manual for the 550 K3 model (which you have), states the front s/b 3.25 x 19 and the rear 3.75 x 18  you can still find the front size with some searching.  I have a Metzler on mine.  The rear size can be safely up graded to 4.00 x 18.  Again I chose Metzler.
I'm convinced that the Metzlers will out perform the bike's capablities.  And keeping the stock sizes restored the nice handling qulaities I lost when I tried metrics for a while.

If you insist on going metric, this may help:
