Engine paint, a new discovery
« on: July 01, 2007, 12:34:18 AM »
Painted some engine parts with "chrome aluminum" spray paint. Looked okay, a little too "fake", too much fake chrome. Sprayed the parts down with brake parts cleaner and wow, looks like the factory engine color now! Very even, semi gloss, does not look or feel like paint. Compared my results to an original engine and it matches perfectly. Tried again, got best results by painting, 5 min flash off time followed by the brake parts cleaner. The paint I used was from the Fastener Centre, house brand engine paint.

Interesting. Was this a high temp. paint?  Did the brake parts cleaner just dull the finish?

have you "tried" to scratch it to see if it's the paint or meal you are seeing? some paints and primers are said to etch the metal, would be interesting to know if it is the paint or the metal showing.

I've had the same results with applying clear coat over chrome paint.

all the brake parts cleaner I've used will take off fully dried spray paint, is this some tough paint or as gtyler theorizes just etched metal?
