dunstall fender/ fork stabilizer brace?
« on: July 10, 2007, 08:26:07 PM »
I've looked at many posts and at pictures of dunstalls like these...

I haven't found out how, or if, the forks were linked using fork braces or other stabilizers.

Is it possible that these fenders don't need anything but the hose clamps around the fiberglass fender to make the forks work together and reduce wobble?  I thought there would be something else, but I cant make-out a brace or other stabilizer in any of the photos I've seen.

Are fork braces not as important as I assumed they were?  I see race bikes with no front fender and no bracing.  I just got a fender off ebay and want to install it but I'm a lil' concerned about the lack of fork stabilization.   What gives?

Thanks!

I have had several of those and similar fenders that simply were clamped to the fork when I got them. I usually pitch the front fender anyway so I haven't tried to use a brace with one.

Thanks Chung! I'm starting to believe they were just run w/o any bracing but I wanted to know others experiences.  Thanks for the info!

The Dunstall finder that I have is only clamped with very small hose clamps
the finders are very strong and stable. Atleast for my application
If you look close in the pictures you can see the clamps.
they don't look the best but work fine with my "dunstall racer" that I am building

great pictures though

I´ve been running my 750 with a flimsy Rickman-replica front fender that is only attached with hoseclamps.
No problems.

Personally I think forkbraces are a bit overrated.
Make sure your chassis is good:
- true wheels
- good wheelbearings
- steering head bearings
- swingarm bushes
- rear shocks
 etc...

I´ve been pushing my bike qiute hard with not as much as a tendency to a wobble.

Cheers
Dan

I looked at getting an airtech fender, its says in their website to drill out the rivets holding the old fender on and use the bracket with the new fender.

Dunstall didn't use fork braces, the fiberglass fenders were simply clamped or bolted to the forks. Over the years fork braces have become more usefull as tire technology has progressed. As racing compound tires have increased grip, frame and fork flex has become a more significant issue. If your riding will be mainly on the street, running without a fork brace shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks everybody!  I think I'll just use the clamp method as I'm not near any tracks.  I had thought about drilling out the old brace from the original fender but I don't think it will fit under the Dunstall fender (replica).  It is fairly thick (3/16") and has a pronounced angle at the top and I think the brace would make it ride way to high and not look right.

that's what I did. the front fender in my avatar is off a nighthawk and didn't have an internal fork brace. I ground out the rivets from my stock fender and installed the brace uinderneath the new fender.  works fine.
