Odd weather today
« on: July 01, 2007, 07:24:57 PM »
I went for a ride today with my usual mate and within the course of 2 hours we hit 3 very different sets of weather.

1). Around 2pm it was 100 degrees and very dry. We are in the middle of a drought so the usual Georgia sweltering humidity has been very low this year. It was surprisingly good riding weather.

2). Around 3pm it got very cloudy and dropped to about 75 degrees. The wind picked up and I wished I had a jacket. The rain began just as we pulled into a covered gas station.

3). Around 3:30 the rain stopped, the sun returned, and the temp went back up to about 90 degrees. All the moisture in the air also raised the humidity to about 100%. The air became very thick and muggy. It was like being in a swamp.

Georgia is known for having very weird and quarky weather but this is some of the most drastic changes I have seen in a very long time.

did the same thing here yesterday and today (Huntsville AL area)
The weirdest thing that I saw, was today, a storm came up out of the west, looked like we'd get some heavy rain from it... but no. a hole in the rain had opened up over a 3 mile area that I'm right in the middle of, and that hole stayed in the same spot as the storm moved on, until it finally closed up and actually rained enough to leave puddles. While everywhere around me got a pretty good downpour.

I used to think that was a regional saying, but over time, I believe I have heard it attributed to every state in the Union! ::) ::) ::)

Ride to work this morning was perfect weather.  Not a cloud in the sky, sun coming up nice and bright over my back, around 70degrees, slight wind.  Wish we had this on the weekends... ::)

Here in Florida during the summer, the exact same pattern happens every day. Brihgt and sunny, cold and raining, bright and sunny and HUMID. The clods stay in little chunks, and if you do it right, you can out run them.

Down here in NOLA we have something similar...

HOT and STICKY
LESS HOT, raining BUCKETS, still sticky
rain leaves, really HOT again, more sticky

I deal with this with just about every storm that comes through here. My office is at the bottom of some decent hills (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floyds_Knobs,_Indiana) and they break up storms. My house is about 5 miles due east from here and the storms form up again on the other side. I call this the "weather hole" as we miss all the good stuff. It's not uncommon for me to stand in my dried-out yard and watch rain all around me without feeling a drop. In the winter, everyone else will get 10" of snow and we might get an inch. Very frustrating.

That's how the weather is around Chicago..
We can have all 4 seasons in one day (and it happens quite often)..
Take the past Mods Vs. Rockers III
10am --> Perfect with temps in the upper 70's
1pm -----> temps in the upper 90's and humid as hell
2pm--------> cloudy and in the lower 70's
3:30pm------> Complete Downpour
4:30pm----------> Sun was back out and now it was really humid :o
Pic from the wet ride down Lake Shore Drive-->
Still a good time though  ;D

Oklahoma City = new record.  Rain 20 days in a row!   ???

Don't like Seatlle?  Try OKC.  Same weather - same basketball team (soon).
