So what does a wrinkle tank go for? What would this one go for? Obviously its lost value from some crazy hippy painter but the inside really is like new (absolutely no rust, I know because I removed the petcock and it was clean plus the bike has been in a dry basement for many years.) I am not ready to sell any of it yet, I like it too much. Just curious.

The wrinkle tank is probably worth at least 500 bucks if it has little or no rust or dents. I would advise against banging the
gas cap closed as the spot weld or the cap latch will break. Obviously a great find for the price, but lots of the expensive parts are missing. The fact its running is a big plus.  ;)

What is a wrinkle tank?  From the youtube video it looks very similar to other CB tanks.

i dont know the manufacturing process, but on the early 750s, the gas tank was form fitted over the frame giving it a "wrinkled" appearance, look closely in the gas tank shot and you will see the ridges, or wrinkles, there.
It is opposed to the stamped steel that all later models have.

If the bike in the first/orig. post video has an 11/69 date on the VIN plate, at least that's what I thought I heard him say, it doesn't have a true "wrinkle tank." The stopped long before that.

Bob, the video shot through the gas into the tank clearly shows the wrinkles. Maybe the tank wasn't the original one for the frame. BTW, the wrinkles run fore and aft in the tank..not across. I've seen other tanks that appeared to have crosswise wrinkles as viewed from the bottom. They may have been more to the front of the tank as opposed to directly underneath the gas cap.

I don't know the exact serial number that ended the run of "wrinkles", but my diecast has them...sn 8200 or so.

Fascinating, all these details.  ;)

Techy,

I believe you are correct. I was going by the VIN date. I dug out Mark Haycock's book and it does, in fact, appear to be a wrinkled tank. By 11/69 they had stopped that method (mine's 11/69 and VIN 10017898 so it does not have it), not sure when it was changed either. The tank must be from an earlier bike. Lucky owner on that score anyway... you too by the way. ;)

I don't think it is a sandcast. I tried freezing the video when he was looking at the vin tag and I think the vin starts wit 1011... but I can't tell for sure. I also don't think he has a clue and I don't think the tail light is right either, it looks kinda like a magna tail light to me.

Here is one on ebay. You can see the wrinkles good in this picture.

It's not a sandcast by the way.
