Cracked overflow tube on early float bowl!
« on: July 13, 2025, 05:04:15 PM »
I saw it got way bent & I gave my carbs to an old timer friend to inspect & reassemble but he said the tube was cracked & will try to fix. My questions are; anybody got a good spare available(since I can’t find one..reasonable anyway) or would the fix be using an epoxy like jbweld that’s fuel resistant?? Tia!

Clean it, flux and solder with the correct solder for copper/brass.

Here’s one I soldered up. It had a crack right up the side of the tube. No idea how this happens! Condensation and then frost? No one seems to have a good explanation. Vibration?

Water in the gas, yes condensation, then freezing temps to expand the brass like copper pipes do when frozen.

I soldered one successfully too, on a smaller cb350f bowl. Use lots of flux on the outside and try to be fast so you don’t weaken the aluminum bowl to copper connection. Solder upside down so the solder drips away from the tube and won’t clog it, rely on the solder to wick it into the crack.

I have wondered if you could drill and tap the floatbowl the screw in some brass tube, keep meaning to try it but have never got a floatbowl, taps, dies, tube and time all together at once!!!

Solder looks like a good fix, not to complicated, cleanliness is important.
Glad we don't have freeze/thaw here!
