shifter lever oil seal installation
« on: July 04, 2007, 08:25:06 AM »
i am attempting to replace the oil seal around the shifter rod where it goes into the transmission. i have a slow leak that is tolerable but would like to get this done.

can anyone tell me how to get the old one out and the new one in? is it just a matter of grabbing it with a needle nose pliers and yanking it out, then pressing the new one in there?

this is for a 76 cb550K.

Needle nose pliers wont work, screw a SMALL self tapping screw into the flat surface facing outwards being carefull not to damage the alloy casing or the steel shaft then pull on he screw.

To re-instal tape over the spline end and clean ALL the crap off the shifter shaft then slide the lubricated seal over the shaft and pus in square with a piecr of pipe.

Oil seals are standard parts, and most of the ones Honda uses are available from bearing supply places like Motion Industries. Larger ones usually have the size marked on the closed edge, like 35x25x6 - this is for a 35mm hole with a 25mm shaft and it's 6mm thick, really small ones are hard to be sure which number means what as the order is not standardized. If yours doesn't have the marking you just measure the 3 dimensions. The really really small ones - for example in the speedo drive housing around the driving shaft is about 5mmx2mmx4mm - are pretty much unobtainable. Special seals with retaining tangs or rings (available only as OEM parts) are used in the engine cases where the crank pressure could blow them out - but only on the big seals with a large area for the pressure to work on: the small ones like the shifter shaft are plain press-in.

i prefer to use a socket to drive in seals.  try to make sure you are driving on the outer edge of the seal.  it could warp and tweak if driven in wong

Trouble with socket is the shaft wont fit through the hole

I would suggest you to tape the shifter axle and lube the tape in order to avoid any damages on the seal lip.
after assembling, remove the tape.
