Piston ring wear
« on: July 04, 2007, 12:08:11 PM »
My '81 650 is using oil. Does not smoke at all. I removed the dipstick last night with the engine running both hot and cold.and noticed excessive blowby. Power is still good, starts easy. Are the rings on their way out or do they wear to a point and than slow down and go forever? I will be fixing the oil leak at my head this fall and have the whole top end from another engine. Is this something that I should worry about in the near future or just plan on doing the top end this fall when I do the oil leak? This engine has 60 000 km on it. How long can the bottom ends go on these? -Dave

A compression test, both dry and wet, will tell you a lot about the condition of your rings.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
