Cool mind challenge for you. Hope you like it.
« on: July 05, 2007, 12:29:08 AM »
I have a great brain challenge for you. About 97% of the people are unable to figure this one out. Will you be among the 3%?

PM me for the answer, but promise you will not reveal the answer to anyone else until they really give up.

Three men are on a trip. They arrive at a motel and are told the room will be $30. Each man pays $10 to pay for the room.Yeah, its not much for a room but it wasn't much of a motel.

Later that evening after shift change, the replacement desk clerk saw that the room had been rented for the wrong amount. The room should have been rented for $25, so he sent the assistant to the room to return the $5.

On his way to the room, the assistant thinks that it is impossible to split $5 three ways, so he pockets $2, and gives each of the men $1.

Here is the challenge: Each man paid $10 and got $1 back making what they paid $9. $9 times three men = $27. The assistant has $2. $27 + $2 = $29. Where is the other $1?????

I had my buddies at work stumped with this one a long time ago.
Wasn't there a criteria to solving the riddle?  Something like, you have to explain it non mathmaticlly or without actually breaking it down on paper.
It's a prtty good brain teaser.

Seen this before, so I won't ruin it.

So that nobody sends a Bounty Hunter after me, I must come clean -

I offered to send money via PayPal.  But, being the cheab ba$tard that I am, I wanted to wait and see if the tires came in.

Now that they have, um...

I'm keeping my money!

I am not so sure this was supposed to be hard. I suppose if you dont read it very well, then it could be a stumper.

I think a better question is "what is this bolt for?"  ;D

I think I have it figured out now!!

You had it right, but Turtle beat you by a little over an hour. I misread her submission and marked it wrong, when in fact it was correct. My only excuse was that I had just woken up when I read the replies. I wasn't quite up to thinking at that point.

Eldar, while your brilliance has never been in doubt, this was more a matter of deductive reasoning and seperating the wheat from the chaff, what is important information to take into account and what isn't. What matters here is how one goes about solving the challenge and how they perceive what they read.

Personally, I love brain teasers, and can't wait for the next one I find.
