OT - 2-stroke vintage race bikes?
« on: July 05, 2007, 09:45:45 AM »
This guy was at the track last weekend - its a 125cc 2-stroke single, I think from the 60's - it sounded like it ran pretty damn strong and certainly looked fantastic. He packed up and left before I could make it over to talk to him more about it.  Does anyone know anything more about these?  I havent been able to find much information at all....

Looks like one of the old Yamaha TD road racers.

I've run with them in AHRMA 200gp and they are fast.

It could be a TD that he's thrown a disc at or could it be an RS125 Honda?? Is so that would be a little later in the seventies? Been a while.

I think it's a 1977-78 Mt 125R . fairly rare ( about 200 into the US every year)

Now to find one...

I had one about 12 years ago but it had a Yamaha motor in it, found it wanting to much and got rid.
I should have kept it as they are fetching silly money now, even for spares.
A guy I know in Yorkshire has dozens of them, I think he is trying to capture the market. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

It could have been a TA 125 Engine if it was a twin. If a single probably a Yz 125.

have an old cycle magazine issue with a story on these MT's. It was simply a cheap ticket into racing. Basically the engine was the 125's motocrosser unit slotted in a light road racing frame. level of other components wasnt that high, forks and front disc where from current honda street models but the idea was to produce a budget racer.

That's right there were two MT's, a 250 also. They powered the short lived enduro's here. As I recall they couldn't compete with the Yamahas, but gave quite a few people the chance to go racing inexpensively.

You're probably right :(

I'll just have to keep my ear on the ground and hope to get a 'barn fresh' bike or something.  I'm looking for a dedicated track bike, and a newer RS125 is on my list along with a few others.

That is a MT12R, appears to even have a upgraded/larger front disc with the hydraulic upgrade from the original mechanical disc brake. I raced one from 78-1981. Even painted it the same as the thumbnail someone sent in the RWB paint scheme. They were fun and can still be found. There was a unmolested one for sale a few years back and VMD at Mid-Ohio......
