They are electronic  CDI ignition if I remember correctly.

No kickstart so make sure charge system is working good!

Supposedly these motors are not as tough as the sohc ones but as long as oil change is done and you do not beat on it, I doubt there will be much of a problem.

I myself would like to get a cb900 custom. But then I want a v65!

Yes, electronic ignition and solid-state combined regulator/rectifier.  Spark ignitors are a common failure point if they're the Oki brand.  The NEC versions from the 900 and 1100 bikes are a typical upgrade replacement.

I personally have found the motors to be rather trouble free. At least in the valve department. Have yet to blow one up. Just set'em and forget'em. Nothing really wrong with them. I have one that I will be doing a cafe on by Christmas. The only issues I know of are overheated ignitors from questionable connectors. I know I do not like the way the V-65's handle. The 80's 750's also handle a bit goofy for my taste but that is correctable.

I haven't torn into my engine yet but I did discover that the valve adjustment is shim-based.

Can you elaborate on the handling characteristics and how to correct, ElCheapo?

The correction is harder than you might think but it is do-able. Sort of like the reverse chopper frame cut. Rather than increase the rake, you decrease the rake. This is tricky and best left to a reputable shop that has experience with these.

Otherwise............Normally you will find the handling a little slower than the SOHC Honda 750. It might even feel a bit "chopperish" That is the best way I can think of to describe them. The bars tend to feel heavy in slow tight manuvers like pulling into a parking spot. Feels like the bars want to finish the turn without your help. Truth is they are great bikes less the heavy feeling bars.

And yes these are shim based, they are a pain to adjust and you may need to get someone who has an assortment of shims available. You also need a special tool for installing the shims and removing them. But the bright side is once they are done they will not have to be done for quite sometime.

I know of several people whom want one of these for some reason.

Personally I liked the cb750 dohc more, but....I don't think you can
go wrong for $400. Buy it then you'll probably fall in love with it.

How easy is it to get a title where you live?  That's something you should seriously look into before buying an un-titled bike.  In some states they make it so difficult that it's not worth it unless you're basically getting a really expensive vehicle for free.

I had an 80 or 81. Traded a canoe for it:) It had 20k plus on the clock
as best I remember.

It was in pretty decent shape but not overly cared for when I got it.
I tuned it up etc.....It ran fine and I had no problems that I remember.
Actually is a little stronger hp wise than the sohc's I had had till that point.

i didnt buy the 900, he never called me this morning as he said he would yestarday, no big loss...

I didnt have the money in hand anyway, I was gonna paypal it with my credit card, he just saved me a lot of interest
 ;)

the 81 750k for $225 i may still do if the wife lets me, of course she may "talk some sense into me" and give me more money to "finish the 2 bikes i already have"

haha either way i'm happy

Richard, I would love to get it but I am in ND. So to go there and pick up a bike that I would probably have to trailer back, well you get it I am sure!

Good luck on your purchase opportunity though.
