Preperations for the first start up?

Im finally getting the electrical system on my 76 CB500T. I hope to fire her up for the first time either tomorrow or wednesday. Besides cleaning the carbs, fresh gas, cleaning points, and an oil change, what else should I do before I fire her up?

Does it matter if I use premium or not?

I read about cleaning the internal oil filter in the CB350s I believe. Of course, my Clymer doesnt mention this though. Does the 500 have the same deal going on?

Remove the valve adjuster covers. ( do not need to remove the carbs to get the back one off, just to lids to the carbs. Also need to remove the bottom bolt for the horn and swing it forward ) and cover the cam lobes with oil before starting. Be gentle with gaskets or you can get new ones from Honda. CB450/500ts do not have the greatest top end oiling and setting does not help. Since there is no oil pressure light, do not know when pressurized. Would crank for 20-30 seconds (in 5 to 10 second intervals) before trying to start. You can get to the oil filter by removing the small, round cover on the right side cover. There is a snap ring that holds the the rotor in place. after you remove the snap ring, thread a bolt (I think a long sidecover bolt works) into the threaded hole in the center of the rotor to pull out the rotor. Be sure the gasket is good and wipe out the housing. I have never had to remove to cage to clean it out since they have not been that dirty. Will probably be some metal shavings. Not to worry. If the seal on the rotor is bad, get a new one. Coat the rotor with oil and

put it back in. Make sure it seats properly. Put the snap ring back in and make sure it seats properly. I usually turn over the motor before I put the cover back on to make sure it spins freely. When you put the cover back on, make sure to holes in the cover match up with the holes in the side case. Can put the cover on 3 different ways. Only one lines up the holes.

Lube the cams before startup. Clean the filter before you ride it much.

There are a lot of things the Clymer won't have in it.  Get the factory book.  I have always believed that no one knows more about your vehicle than the people that built it.

And go back to the points and lube the points cam.  Honda says oil, but a silicone based grease will last longer.  This is often a neglected area.

Thanks guys. Ill scour ebay tonight when I get home form work and buy one.

I cant wait to fire her up for the first time. :)
