a nice safe place to nest...
« on: July 09, 2007, 10:11:30 AM »
As if it wasn’t already obvious enough that I don’t get to ride as much as I would like to…now a bird has gone and built a nest and laid eggs in my $@!#$@ helmet. Now I either have to upset the delicate balance of nature, or I have to wait until my little baby helmet birds are hatched and out of the nest. ;D

Gives new meaning to the term "Bird Brain".

Thanks for the picture. :)

Next I need a picture of a biker with a bird house on his head.  Fair trade?

Avian lice... not fun.  Ever picked up an old nest and felt the invisible things crawling all over your arm.  I wouldn't put that helmet back on until it had been fumigated, aired out, then burned for good luck ;D

Sorry bud, looks like you're in the market for a new helmet.

holy crap that is hilarious!!
when was the last time you put that helmet on??
well, it is a shame, because the helmet looks almost brand new.
Once the bird leaves the nest, i would just bug bomb it instead of spending $100+ on a new helmet

For now, of course, just leave it alone.  Any attempt to improve the housing for the birds may just scare the parents off.

That is the sweetest post I can remember on this forum.   :D

Oh man! :D :D  I'm with the "get a new helmet" crowd!  I don't even want to think about all the different kinds of parasites wild birds have, not to mention the months worth of baby and mamma bird excrement that it will be stewing in until they finally leave the nest.  Any kind of pesticide and cleaners you could use to make it safe to wear again would probably just melt the styrofoam core, anyway.

Not so cute was the HUGE WASP I found in my Hippo Hand.  And I didn't just leave it.  That wasp is history.

I went for a very buggy ride along the Mississippi River last night. When I came home my helmet was covered in bug guts and I was just like I,ll clean it tomorrow. Came out to fine my helmet covered in ants! must be some hard off ants >:(

Do tell us where.  Or, give some examples of a manufacturer that does this.   I have a couple older Shoei helmets that have deteriorating soft foam and I want to replace the internals apart from the styrofoam and shell.
Everybody tells me buy a whole new helmet!

Every year, a bird would build a nest in a half-empty case of oil that I keep on a shelf.  This past winter, on a hunch, I hung an empty case nearby.  Sure enough- the bird built a nest in that and I can get to my oil.  Win-win.  (They sure get mad when I spend too much time in there while the babies are peeping, though.)

Our cat was being attacked by a killdeer last night on the porch. Too funny! He was pawing at the door and going bonkers. The bird was perched on the grill and screeching at him, occasionally diving at him. My wife let him in but I thought it was great. Serves him right for killing the rabbits behind the house.
