What did you pay for bore/hone?
« on: July 12, 2007, 07:44:40 PM »
I need to get my 550 cyl block bored out for 61mm pistons and I'm shocked at the prices I've been quoted.  Nevermind how many shops have told me to pound sand since "it's not a Harley".....

I've been quoted $240 up to $480 for a simple 4cyl bore/hone job.  Most of the places I've called that didn't give me the "Harley BS" didn't have a bore tool small enough.

I know that we're in an economic depression here in Michigan, but are these prices the "norm" for this kind of work? ???  I've had car engines completely machined for $400 before!  I wish my usual shop had the right boring bar.....

I was quoted, here in UK, £200 ($400) to fit liners, bore to suit pistons and open up crankcase
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

About $50.00 a hole is normal, high price is probably because they don't want to do it (it takes too long to get it right)
BTW, if it was 'simple' you could do it yourself. As you know, it needs some relatively expensive and probably underused equipment. If you get totally stuck, find out how much it would cost to ship to Florida (PM me)

I paid $40 a cylinder for a bore and hone a few years ago from Imprort Machine in Framingham.

I had my 550 bored to fit the 555 kit (think that's the 61mm but not sure) for $40/per and the guy went ahead and surfaced the head for me for free.  Local shops are the place to go.  The smaller, the better.

Was $50 a hole the last time I had it done, but the guy said next time it would be $75 a hole because of how long it took to bore 3mm of material from each hole :P

I'll be shipping my next cylinder block ANYWHERE in the US that offers $40-$60  a hole.

I just had 2 motors done at 50 a cylinder here in the twin cities. not sure if it was a 'friend of a friend' discount or not, but thats what I paid.

I think I remember cyclexchange quoting 240 to bore a 736 to an 836 on their website, but you'd have to ship it to them

I did a 550 here in N. Texas a couple of years ago... $40.00 per cylinder.   This of course was for a half a millimeter bore. Anything over half a millimeter and the price goes up.

$40 CND per hole two years ago for 2nd over at the local NAPA shop, but I asked around first for someone that knew what they where doing.  Cost $240 total for the bore and flatten.

Wow, I think I got a deal....29.00 per hole bored and honed.
A local mom and pop cycle parts place here in St. Louis. None of
the automotive shops around here could do it because of the small
size either.

Forgot until I saw some later posts, some places will charge a bore for every half millimeter so if your going 3mm OS you get charged 6 bores per hole less the 'set-up' fee or about $50.00 for first one and $10~$15 per 0.5mm after that.
Its a rip off but they have the equipment and you don't is the way they look at it, plus they probably don't want to do it

That's exactly what one of the shops told me.  It makes sense, but it sucks when your the one paying!  ;)

I found a guy that does cyl boring/sleeving out of garage.  He talked the talk- telling me how he matches a piston to a specific cyl (clearance wise), asking me what exact wall clearance I want, what type of finish, etc etc.  He quoted me $45 a hole, so I dropped it off this morning.

When I pulled up and saw a Goldwing in the driveway along with a bunch of small engine blocks already machined out, I knew I found the right guy.......... at least I hope so!   8)

just checked with these guys for 750 cylinders... quoted 250 for the over bore plus shipping to get it out to WI from OH.(eight months of inflation from the previous post i guess) Might be my best option cosidering in the email reply i got he said "yeah we've done these cylinders several times before, thats no problem" <= thats exactly what i was looking for, experience, local shops that even consider doing it come up with a line more like "yeah we could probably do that" .....experience pays in in my book at least in this department
I also emailed a couple more people i found.....somebody mentioned Ape in another post so im waiting to hear back from his shop too.
anybody have any suggestions for local/fairly local shops in or near ohio? or somewhere closer to ship them?
that price seems to be about average

When you guys are talking big bore it is a lot of extra cutting..like  almost 1/8 of an inch comming out..whereas a normal cut is a 32nd or under.

Wait till you get into real bigbore, there is one cylinder that I bore on the lathe, that get 1/2 inch taken out..over 12mm :o

So I rough them out to within a few thou, and then the automotive machine shop hones them..

I will ask what he charges for a 4cyl, they do a lot of m/c and watercraft cylinders..

OK, If anyone in Western Canada needs this done.

Okanagan Engine Rebuilders

Kelowna BC

Can do your 4cyl and other, they do the boring for several of the big dealerships...200.00 for a 4cyl.. that is bore & hone(I assume big bore is more) Decking is 65.00 extra..done with a CBN cuter, a very nice finish and they will take off as little as .003-.006 or more if needed.

If you need contact info post here or contact myself.
