Handgrip Upgrade
« on: July 03, 2005, 09:33:11 AM »
ok, the handgrips on my 75-550K are just a hair too small and make my right hand wonky. Fortunatly, replacement grips are cheap and I THOUGHT they'd be simple to swap out.

1. HOW IN THE HELL DO I GET THE OLD ONES OFF?

2. Is the right one an integral part of the throttle, or is it a grip slipped over a plastic tube?

Tips? Help?

if they are original they are glued on and you will have to cut them off. No the rh one is not part of the tube its just tight

I haven't had to cut grips off since I can't remember when, (that might be yesterday).  I work a long, slender screwdriver between grip & bar or throttle sleeve & inject a little solvent.  Gas works fine.  As the solvernt lossens the glue I twist & pull with a little more solvent  & the grip comes off.  Use the same technique to install.  This works on footrest rubbers & other similar items, too.

aN old motocross trick is to use hair spray to slip and glue your grips on your bars. Just spray A bunch in the grip, slip it on and let it sit for a few minutes.

I go through grips like crazy because I keep finding ones that are more comfortable. Just sharpen your Swiss Army knife and cut.  If found that the best way to get them on and stay is NOT with those "wonky" glues they sell (did I get that right?).  Sray the inside with belt dressing (which you won't have around the house unless you work on cars a lot), or clear coat spray paint. Jam it in place fast and it dries almost instantly.
Any grips you get should have one inside diameter larger than the other. The larger one is for the throttle tube. If you're using rubber mounted bar-ends like Napoleons, just whack the ends with a mallet or 2x4 and the handlebar edge will cut a clean hole. Make sure there is about 2/32" at the end of the throttle so the rubber doesn't expand and restrict the tube movement.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I've also sprayed some WD-40 on the bar and throttle sleeve, then slipped the grips on and in a few minutes, they are tight as in no movement.

Windex here--but plain water would probably be just as good.

Me too - just a drop though or it takes months to dry! Used in small quantities the soap lubricates and dried out after a day or so and acts like glue!

Actually, I used Dishsoap.

I remember doing just that back in the '70 once.  But, when I washed the bike or rode in the rain, the grips came loose.  I had to rinse all the soap off and just put them back on with water as lube.  No more slippage problems after that.

For my $2 I used that new-fangled grip-glue.

I have found though that the new hi-tech grips made with Eucalyptus extract etc. don't fit as well as good old Honda grips.  I ordered stock Honda parts for the total stock look, and find they are on more solid than any grip I've had in the past.  I also find them just fine comfort-wise, so long as you're wearing your gloves (which you should be anyhow).

Us here in the midwest have a wide range of temps. Many days in the summer it can go from 60 in the morning to 90 or 100 by afternoon. Gloves and jackets all the time just are not an option sometimes. You would get too hot and passout while riding.

As for grips, when I replaced mine. I cut the old ones off and used nothing to put the new ones on. NOTHING! it was not the easiest but they do not slip AT ALL.

I'm too paranoid to ride without my gear, regardless of temp.  It gets REAL nasty here in Toronto in the summer.  Thankfully the next few days are going to max out in the 70's  ;D
