Gotta love "Push/Pull" cables
« on: July 16, 2007, 01:32:31 PM »
Took the bike to work this morning (30 min drive) and about half way there (literally, "Middle of Nowhere") the pull cable snapped. :-[.  Well, 15 minutes later I'm back on the road to work. :D  Pulled the tank off and pulled out the broken cable, then unhooked the push cable and hooked it up to the pull side of the throttle cam. So much for getting the seat fixed :'(, but I need the cables more.

there is a lot of stress on that pull cable! A person might do well to replace it every few years. At least you made it!

Yea that push cable is a very handy spare. Nice how Honda included an emergency spare. I know there are several old CB's I worked where I never even installed the push cable until months after it was done.

I'm hoping that this will run me till Friday, two new cables should be in by then.  Definitely would confuse any "Would be" thief trying to take her, crank on the throttle and nothing ;).  Could have been the ones that came on the bike.  Had to replace the clutch cable this Spring when it decided to part ways, so should have known the throttle wasn't too far behind.

I've been pretty lucky so far, cable broke twice, and each time it's been real close to where I was going, so I just reached under the tank and worked the carbs by hand and made it home.

Only time a cable's realy screwed me up was years ago out in the walowa whitman in Oregon, kawasaki dirt bike 50 miles out in the boonies, cable broke and had to scrounge up a bolt and nut from the chain gaurd and hook the throttle to the front brake lever (told you it was years ago!) worked great till the biggest Elk I've ever seen stepped out in front of me on the fire trail and I grabbed a handfull of brake.  Luckily he took off as fast as the bike did.

ken.

I met up with someone for a ride once and his throttle cable snapped a short way into the ride.  Since it was a Sunday, there was no hope of finding any bike shops open anywhere.  It was a hellishly hot day, but the woman who owned the house right by the intersection came out and offered us the comfort of her living room and suggested that when her boyfriend returned home he might be able to find a spare cable for us since he had several Harley's in the garage.  Well, he didn't have a cable that would fit, but he did have a mig welder and after welding on a new cable end from his box of spares, we were back on the road.  I think the bike on which the cable broke was a CB350.

Since then, I replace my cables frequently and carry one of the old cables as a spare.
