New CB750 in the works?
« on: July 16, 2007, 06:32:20 AM »
I didn't notice anyone posting about this, but it is rumored that the bike that set the standard for all modern Japanese motorcycles seems to be in the works.  They even are making it air-cooled to boot.  Can't wait to see what it looks like.  http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/mcn/2007/July/july16-22/jul1607newhondacb750motorcyclerumoured/?R=EPI-92750

You mean instead of spending the better part of a year resurrecting mine and fooling with those carbs, I could have waited and just bought one?! ;D

I'm impressed by the idea, yet underwhelmed by what I saw in the pics.

It needs to be a TOTAL recreation of the 1969 K0 models.  I mean to where the most knowledgeable and learned CB750 experts could not tell the new one apart when placed next to a equal-condition original sandcast.

Not just a "modern interpretation of the old bike with new technology, blahblahblah", but a NEW-PRODUCTION K0.

I doubt that would be possible if they intend them to be street legal, at least in the U.S.  A new 750 built exactly to the original specs wouldn't pass modern EPA standards.

Ya, I was noticing the DOHC.  Full floating discs too.  No kick start.   >:(

Interesting idea but I'm thinking EPA would kill this bike before it hit the states.

If it comes I will buy it.  I was looking into a Thruxton but now I'll wait and see what happens with this.

Ditto, was at a big bike race meeting recently looking at all the bikes and the Triumph Thruxton was the only bike that turned my head, and made me think of buying a "modern" bike.

I think it would stay stock for a couple months and then I couldn't resist.  It would have to get modified. Not much but a little change would go a long way.

If you read the article, it says the engine has been updated to pass emission standards. A lot has been learned in 35 years. It will probably have more power also.

Kind of like the old vs. new VW bugs.  Worlds apart.  New may be nice, but they don't have the same (any?) personality.

I'm anxious to see the new ('09?) Camaro, but will probably still find the '69 more desirable...

Very true, I would miss the minimal braking, vague handling and fiddling with the carbs.   8)

Seriously, though - isn't it worth that to be able to work on it yourself?

Don't you expect a computer chip in the new ones that will require a trip to the dealership?

That's my complaint with all the new "stuff".  Great features, but not worth giving up that freedom/independence/self-reliance.

Can you tell I was born on the 4th of July?   ;D

EPA carbs now have everything pre-orificed so there is no tuning to be had... might as well come fuel injected.

They already know that John Q is looking for pipes and a bigger jet.

Nope, I would rather ride than wrench at this stage of my life.

Let's share contradictory feelings.
Sometimes, when I get crazy about the age problems of my bike, and the special attention that needs, and all the problems that a 30 years old bike brings, I wish I could buy the same bike, but new, and I desire Honda to produce it.
But, on the other hand, one of the things that I love about my bike (a 750 K8) is her own story, the years it has been on the road, and all the imaginable travels he has done, and the fact that she still breaths. The bike was bought new in USA, brought to Germany, and later sold in Spain. I'm the proud 4th owner, and, as many other people here, I've learned a lot of mechanics from this bike, and in some way this knowledge has made me love her more.
Buying a retro bike seems like buying a Picasso fake. I can imagine a lot of people buying this remake of a Honda cb 750, the same people that sometimes laugh at you for driving a 30 years old bike. Honda should put the condition of being the owner of a seventies cb 750 to buy a new one, if finally they decide to produce it ;)

I try not to get too emotional with my purchasing decisions.  The reason I bought an old bike is because I loved the way the old Honda's look and since I was raised by women I wanted to learn how to turn a wrench.  If the new one comes out I would buy it because it still has the look I love and I won't have to but so many miles on my classic.
