Cafe Seat Finally Finished!!!
« on: July 15, 2007, 09:10:34 PM »
I finally finished the cafe seat for my '78 550.  I started with a pan from a '75 550F.  I trimmed and shaped the front of the pan to fit my bike.  Then I shaped the foam.  Creating the cover was definitely the hardest part.  Finally, I used contact cement to attach it to the pan.

Lessons learned:
1.  All 550 seat pans are not created equal.   :o
2.  Do not make concave curves in the foam.  The concave step-up is the reason I couldn't get the wrinkles out.

Overall, I am really happy with how it turned out.  There are a few more wrinkles in the cover than I had hoped, but considering it was my first ever (and maybe last ever) upholstery job...

Looks spectacular! That looks like exactly what I would like. Have you had a passenger on the back yet? Also, what type of foam did you use and did you sew the cover yourself?

You should pick up some spray adhesive to get rid of the wrinkles and stretch it tighter.  Looks good tho, nice shape.

Very well done!  I have to second Vitamin's question concerning the foam.

Looks sorta like my seat. I shaped the foam but Sargent did the work.

Thanks guys.  I did sew it myself, and It was my first time on a sewing machine since I was a kid.  The foam from the 75 seat still had really good firmness, so I just used it,  I just cut it down and luckily didn't go too far.

Rhonda750F -- I have some spray adhesive, but how do you use it?  Do you actually hold the top of the cover onto the foam with it?
