coil choice,
« on: September 16, 2007, 12:49:52 PM »
ok, i found tons of great info on the dyna ignition and the coils and what not, but i have one single question that i coulndn't find an answer to:

if i'm going to buy the dyna ignition to eliminate my points and the kit comes w/ 3.0 ohm coils, will this hurt me instead of using the 5.0 ohm coils?

i see people r having trouble w/ their charging systems using the 3.0 ohm coils so they are switching to the 5.0 ohm ones, but i'm not so sure on what i should do, I only plan on running 2 dual 65w headlights and an LED taillight/brake light. so i guess i can change fuse sizes if needed, but I'm not sure on if these coils will be correct for me or not...?

Are you refering to the Dyna 2000? That is the only one that comes with coils.  If so, we can get you a Dyna 2000 with any coil you want.

As far as I know the Dyna 2000 will only run with 3 Ohm or 2.2 Ohm coils. A great system...no doubt.

I wasn't aware that vendors could peddle their wares in this forum. I know some other forums permit it--usually the vendor advertises or contributes in some way. I must have missed what the protocol is.

I know it isn't a peddle deal here...

As far as using the green 3 ohm coils I think from my experience that it all depends on how much city driving you do ie stop lights and stop and go traffic. It also depends on the condition of your battery. I keep a Battery Tender plugged in now to be safe and I don't seem to have any problem. If my turn signal beeper starts to slow down appreciably at idle I either head home or to the freeway.  I drove myself nuts trying to achieve that Holy Grail of 14.5V with my 3 ohm coils and it just didn't happen even after cleaning every friggin connection. It sure runs great with the 3 ohm coils and my Dyna III.

If the bike's charging system is working correctly, the 3 ohm coils will cause no problems.  I've had a Dyna S and 3 ohm coils on my 750F for the last 72,000 miles.  Never a problem.

This past winter I put the green, 3 ohm Dyna coils in my 78 CB750 SS along with the Dyna S electronic ignition and I haven't had any charging problems whatsoever.

And now with the new Dyna equipment installed, my bike performs like I fill the gas tank up with Red Bull compared to those sloppy points that were in there before.

alright, thanx guys, thats just what i was looking for, as far as stop and go traffic, thats definitly here, but also open roads, I'm buying a brand new battery as the bike didn't have one when i got it. but I'll go ahead and get the kit and see how it works. ;D ;D

thats good, I luv the ol kickstart, but right now I'm having a problem w/ my wiring, i'm waiting on a manual, but the bike came w/ no wiring, so i'm trying to figure out the minum wiring i need to get the bike to run. i found a bunch of stuff in the search, but i need to find something more particular and exact on what exactly needs to be done. so i figured once i figure all this out i will hook up the dyna kit and forget bout the points.

Check that regulator!!!

I know thay can be adjusted correctly but I have a few of those non adjustable regs from the guy in Oregon(?) and that my friend, with the dyna ( pick your model) takes all the hassle away, period. And the coils should then fall in line. I know mine did.

I do a lot of city riding, with my bright on all the time, using dyna-s and 3.0 ohm coils. No charging problems.
Just remember to keep her above 3k all the time when actually moving :)
No.

The alternator will yield 150Watts at best.
The ignition with 3 ohm will use about 80 Watts + 130 Watts for headlights = 210Watts. That is stretching it a bit. If you cut one of the headlights you will have no problem.

wait... the regulator? what would i need to check? as far as the lights, i think i'm only gona have a single beam, no high and low, just ON, using H4's

The regulater is a device that keeps the alternator output voltage constant. It is quite simple to check it.

Run the engine and measure the volts over battery. The volt meter should show the following values :

rpm       volts

1000      12 V
2000      12.4
3000      13.2
4000      14.5
5000      14.5
6000      14.5
7000      14.5
8000      14.5

The voltages you measure may vary al little, basicaly it should not drop below 12V or go higher than 15 V. The charging current depends on the batteries internal resitance (witch varies depending on age and charge state) and the voltage. If you descide to measure it, it should be arround 1A not exeding 4A at 2000 rpm. Below 2000 rpm the discharge may be as much as 7 Amps. A good battery should sustain that for an hour or 3.

see,the problem is, right now I'm still trying to get it running, cuz there were no wires, so i'm trying to go by a wiring dyagram and see what the minum is that i can have to get it to run and use the battery, but I'm still playing the game. I think i saw that the other red on the magnetic motor starter powers a switch so this weekend i'll see if i can't figure out some more
