Well, I'm a cheap SOB...and I have a Sears bench vise bolted to my bench...

So I found an old piece of 3" angle iron, cut a 5/8" slot in the middle of it, and bolted it *behind* my vise...

So now I open the vise all the way, put a long bolt in the bottom of the shock and butt it against the end of the movable jaw and fit the angle iron between two coils and crank the vise in...and remove the shock clips and take the spring off...

I have done a bit of "customizing" to my angle iron...cleaned it up, bent the sides to match the angle of the coils, etc...

Cheap, effective, and simple...   ;D
