Funny thing about us...
« on: July 17, 2007, 05:47:38 AM »
We rarely have the helmet discussion, and when we do there are very few that are fervent about NOT wearing helmets.  Those that do argue on that side have the experience to make a sound judgement and have accepted the danger consiously.  I was just on the MJ forums and it seems like 60% of the posts are split between people arguing about gear necessity and tales of putting bikes into the pavement.
Lots of squids I guess but damn, it really makes you appreciate a group like this that has more common sense and real riders.
Nuff from me.

I should have been more clear.  Motorcycle Journal Forums.  The idea of a Michael Jackson forum scares the hell outta me.  I thought they had laws against someone like him using the internet... ???  ;D

I agree with your sentiments Cvillechopper.

The absence of rider and gear discussions is noticeable on this board.

I live in Maine where less than half of riders seem to wear helmets or jackets.

For me riding a bike has enough inherent risks that I owe it to my family to wear some protective gear just in case.  I've become so used to it that I feel nekkid riding without it!

Cheers,

I know what you mean....I feel the same way about my seatbelt....it just doesnt feel right without it! Believe it or not I got in my car to take the garbage at the cottage to the end of the road (about a 1000 ft dirt road) and when I got to the end I realized that I had put my seatbelt on before leaving...talk about muscle memory or whatever but I didn't even realize I had done it...

Here in Ohio, one rarely sees anyone with any amount of riding gear on, but I practically feel naked without my gear on.

I've only ever slid out once onto pavement and it was conveniently the only time I've ever ridden without my jacket on.  It was over 6 months ago and I was going no more than 10-15 miles per hour but you can still tell where I had my road rash.  After that experience you'll never see me without my gear on again.

My daughter's family lives in the Columbus area, we visit them often. During the summer months it's very common to see bikers on I-75 or I-71 doing 70+ with nothing more than sandals, shorts, T-shirts, and of course, no helmet. I cringe every time.

Does that mean that SOHC'ers are more sane?

Or are we just a buncha old farts?

No, it just means we ride because we like to ride and not because we think it looks cool.  The fact that we look cool is just a side benefit. ;D

Probably the safest place to ride is on the freeway at 70mph. Everyone is going the same direction at pretty much the same speed.

I wear a helmet mostly because it's the law.  Sure it's saved my noggin a couple of times, but the funny thing is- when I lived in a state with no helmet law, I never had any close calls, either.  (well-OK- I got a REALLY bad sunburn once)

Back home in the UK I wouldn't dream of going out without a crash helmet and protective gear on, I've seen too many people come back from holidays with 'Magaluf Tattoos' on their arms, legs an/or arses to want the same to happen to me ::)

Here in Thailand however I usually don't wear a helmet, because I find it restricts my vision and hearing too much, and because they drive and ride like nutters you need all your senses on full alert at all times.

I do wear full MX style body armour at all times though, it's a necessity for filtering Bangkok style ;D

AGATT.....Live by that line...

Not sure what that means...Would you clarify?

Here in Milwaukee, there are a substantial amount of Harley riders (not surprising) that are typically wearing T-shirt and jeans.  Only rarely do I see a Harley rider wearing a motorcycle protective jacket, and even fewer wearing a helmet.  I went to the BMW MOA rally this past weekend up in West Bend, WI and its a different story; riders showing up with full gear (helmet, boots, jacket, gloves).  In fact, it was so glaring that my wife even noticed the people on BMW's wearing protective gear when we were coming home from church Sunday morning.   I agree with Gordon, we ride because we like to and not because we think it looks cool.  And with that, comes a responsibility to ourselves and our families to dress accordingly.

There's wisdom in wearing the proper gear.

I don't see why people argue over wearing helmets.

I'm with you.  I don't ride without a helmet, but I'll fight helmet laws on principle.

Too many people think it's their job to decide how others should live.  They'll tell you "it's for your own good - WE know what's best".

Vote Ron Paul!      ;D

I don't see why people argue over wearing helmets. Do what you want, its your life.

I live in Phx,Az so in the city, I never ride without one. Idiots in SUV's on cell phones are EVERYWHERE.

Sometimes on long rides outside the city I'll take it off, if the weathers good. But Usually I have one on.

"It's your life do what you want..."  Is okay, 'til you get disabled in a wreck, can't do sh*t and have to draw SSDI on my dime.  Wear your gear and I will have less reason to complain.
