78 750F part number- shifter oil seal
« on: July 19, 2007, 08:38:45 AM »
Hello all!

I have been looking at the fiche for my 1978 cb750F and I am looking for the part number for the oil seal that goes around the shifter. I can't seem to figure out which one it is. If anyone has ordered this or knows what to look for better than myself- please let me know. I would appreciate it greatly.

I think it's 91206-286-005.  It also shows 91206-286-013 (different brand maybe)

91206-286-013 is the most current part number.  The 005 supercedes to the 013.  For future reference, it is on the page "starter motor @ crankcase cover".
Go metric, every inch of the way!

Also, does anyone ahve any experience with these seals? I was reading recently about how this seal can be decieving. For example, this seal wont hold back the leak I'm experiencing and it is actually something deeper. This seal is only 3 bucks, so it won't hurt, but I try to avoid doing a fix twice when I can :)

A trick I read, I think somewhere on this board, was to put a rubber washer from a garden hose on the shaft behind shift lever to prevent in-and-out motion to lessen wear on the inner part of the seal.

Does anyone know if this is the same part number for a 78 550? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Mike, just make sure you get the old one out before you get the new one in.  And yes, a new one stopped my leak.

Many seals get damaged when slipping them past a splined shaft. Put a corner of a plastic bag over the splines when installing the seal  to prevent this. I always put do the same when putting fork seals over the top of the tube.
