Headgasket not centering over cyl bore.
« on: July 21, 2007, 08:40:43 PM »
In the process of installing an ebay "605 cc" kit on my 550, and the supplied headgasket overhangs the cyl bore on the intake side.  Have a look.....

It seems to me that the holes are not punched in the correct location on this gasket.  Flipping it over had no effect.

I set a stock 550 headgasket on the block followed by the 605 gasket and it overhangs the stock headgasket the same as the block.  (meaning that the bores themselves aren't off)

There's at least .025'' clearance between the top of the piston and the overhanging firering at TDC, but I'm worried that it'll make contact once torqued and up to temp.

I'm bummed, not the thing I wanted to find on a Sat night when the rest of the week is going to be beautiful.....  :(

It does look like the fire ring will protrude into the chamber/cylinder.

How about removing a small amount of gasket material from the locating pin hole to allow the gasket to center better. A touch of high tack spray should then hold it in place??

I was going to try that, but then the two oil passages get blocked by the gasket.  With the locating pin hole being "slotted", I would think that the gasket would move over time with the constant heating/cooling??

I think I'm SOL for right now, hopefully Cometic can help me out this week........

I'm going to try and get ahold of them tomorrow and see if they stock that part number or not.  Thanks for posting that up.
