550 Front Spring Length

I have a 78 550.  While changing my fork oil, I measured my springs.  They are just over 18.5in.  The specs I have read say it should be between 17.78-16.73in.  Anyone know why mine is about 1in too long?

I quess we can only assume the info in the shop manual refers to a different spring.

I have a set from a 77 (not progressive wound but double spring rate) that measure 18.5" also so you're not alone!

It sounds like we have the same type of spring.  It's good to know I'm not alone.
