CB750K4 -rear tire puncture
« on: July 22, 2007, 06:57:43 PM »
In case anyone hasnt had a rear tire puncture before then read on so you can spot the signs....this is my 6th rear wheel puncture in 18 years :-) (5 front ones in 2 months on the Mexico trip!)

I was riding home with a girl on the back of the bike and coming round a rotary leaning in deep as I like to when I felt the bike handle poorly...I looked round to see if my passenger wasnt shifting her wieght properly but she knows what shes doing...suspension perhaps? So I ride on...traffic lights....hill, tight right turn - that funny handling again, uphill, down hill, tight left turn....and then another right turn straight onto an uphill and by this time the bikes seemingly bogging down...I knew what it was straight away...handling was starting to go...and reached top of hill I told my passenger to get off....rear tire was pretty flat...managed to cruise down a short hill and there I was home!

The culprit? A nail/tack in the rear wheel - right in the center.

So basically from first signs of a puncture to getting home was around a mile and there were plenty of warning signs.  This a tube tire. Speed was around 35-45mph. Not too bad all things considered. Nothing compared to a front wheel puncture!!

cheers
Andy

Andy,
I always enjoy your riding stories especially as the usually include a girl on the back of your bike. Can she change a tire though, that would be really impressive!
Glad you made it back in one piece, all best
Ben

Hey Jaknight,
It must be a K4 thing! And I have new Dunlop tires as well. Basically Im going to pull the nail out and just get a new inner tube. In my experience this is fine as Ive had nails in tires before, pulled them put, patched up the tube and was good for thousands of miles more on the same tire (this from my Mexico trip). Nowadays bike shops can plug the tubeless tire and you are good to go - any bike shop should be able to do it for you - not sure how much it is (in the past Ive paid $20 to get my tube fixed - as long as I removed the wheel from the bike). Dont worry a new tire is NOT required!

Good luck,
Andy

Is it safe to patch a tube in a tube type motorcylce tire?

I used to do bicycles all of the time, but never had a motorcycle experience.

The darn tube is maybe 3 months old... I have a feeling it got pinched during install because it is leaking air out around the valve stem orifice and I rode all summer with no problems. After I get done with the siding on my house this weekend I plan to further investigate to see what the cause was. I made sure to clean the rim real well and feel for any sharp spots before installing the new tube and tire.

Yes you can patch a tube in a tube tire but if available Id buy a new inner for $2 and use that instead.

cheers

Okay Andy, now you have to enlighten us. Where is it that you're getting inner tubes for $2? Mexico perhaps?  ;D ;D

Good post Andy!!!!!...I just got my bike going(finally got the last piece.....brake hose from HELUSA) My brand new Metzeler tire I bought 100 miles away (San Jose,Ca,) back in like March-April was almost flat when I installed it. I kinda thought it was because of the heat all these months......no such luck!!!! In the past couple of weeks,I have put air in it and it is definitely loosing air. The dude in San Jose had to have pinched the tube when he installed it. Tomorrow,I will go get another tube and install it myself. I sure don't want a slow leak to deal with when I take it to work (60 miles each way for the time being.) My Toyota truck is also due for it's timing belt/ water pump replacement so I have my 3 day Labor Day weekend spelled out!!!!! Anyway .....happy motoring everybody and have a SAFE Labor Day weekend............

This is what I heard is the best plug / quick fix for tires.
http://www.stopngo.com/motorcycle.asp

I carry the CO2 kit with me now.  Those canisters are kinda pricey.

The plugs are only good for tubeless tires not tubed tires -you will still have to remove inner tube and patch it on tubed tires. If its a slow puncture you can use your CO2 gas canister to get you to the next town/air pump whatever....in my experience with slow punctures this is good for 10 miles max before it completely deflates, often with tank-slapping consequences....been there done that a couple of times....

...one of those times was at Devils Tower, Wyoming, 25 miles from nearest town of Sundance. I awoke after having the coldest camping experience of my life, to see my K4 front tire flat as a pancake (with Devils Tower in the background). I managed to find a fellow camper who had some mountain bikes...I borrowed the pump and inflated front tire and then made for Sundance quickly riding at 40-50mph. I got maybe 10 miles and was going downhill when tire gave up on me....managed to stop ok at side of road in middle of nowhere...flagged a couple of people down asking for an air pump until maybe the 7th car had one...inflated tire and it got me the remaining distance to Sundance and a local Harley shop (an old shed at back of town :-)). Fixed the flat and was back on the road by 11.30am!! What a morning that was  ;D

Mick - Im sure Clffs Cycle only charges $2 for an inner....

cheers

It's an epidemic!  I started out from Birmingham this morning on my way to visit my kid in Columbia, TN.  My F2 was running great, I was about 40 miles out when it started handling squirrely.  Pulled over, the rear was going down.  Called a buddy who lives near, and we loaded it in his truck and brought it home.  It too was leaking around the valve stem.  I couldn't find a puncture anywhere.  Took it back to the people who mounted the Dunlops when they were new.

Andy,

I know the feeling. Its like the rear end is made from rubber.
I had the rear tire explode once. No I did not lay it down but I was all over the place trying to keep the rubber on the asphalt.

...flagged a couple of people down asking for an air pump until maybe the 7th car had one...

I stole this idea, but it works and is cheap.  It is the guts out of a 10 dollar Walmart pump.  I put it in a 5" square Tupperware container along with all the other tire patching stuff.  I take it with me when I travel.  I haven't had to use it myself yet, but it has bailed a few other people out.

There are commercial alternatives available, but like I said, this one is cheap.  (But watch your fingers.)

Would that fit under the seat in the little tool box?

Labor day weekend; ya I hve been busting hump replacing siding on my house... It was only suppose to take a day or so: HA!I hope to get my front tire off sometime next week and get a look at what the deal is. I'll be sure to let everyone know what I find.

It fits in the box under the seat in the tail on the F models.  (Without the Tupperware.)
