Don't Let Those Carbs Sit! (With Visual Aids)
« on: July 23, 2007, 06:13:35 PM »
Pulled and dipped a carb off my free '75 550 this week. These were left on the bike outside in Minnesota from '98 to '05. Some before-and-afters for your viewing pleasure:

Looks like I may be parting this bike out after all rather than trying a full restore.  Unless anyone has a magic carb restoration idea? The rest of it isn't much better.

The good news is that carb dip works great!

Ah, yes, since the wonders of capitalism only gave me one choice at my local auto parts store :-[, I didn't have to think too hard about brand preference.  It's Solder Seal "Gunk" Carb Cleaner in a paint can.

Mine were quite chewed like that, so I JB welded my jets in.  Since they were essentially shot, I figured what's the worst that could happen.  Basically just keep the form of what was originally there so it all goes back together(in other words, don't just slop it on).

Yeah it's redneck, but read all the uses on the JB weld package and you'll feel alot better about it.

I recently saw a thread about using a 50/05 mix of Simple green/water (with photos) that looks like a winner.  I think it was Bob Wessner

As for a good carb cleaner, go check your local autoparts store.  I have never used it this way...maybe somebody has, but Purple Power is a biodegradeable degreaser/cleaner, and seems like it would work well on a dirty old carb.  It works well on just about every other part of the bike i've tried it on.

It looks OK to me. The main jet and float valve have O-rings, and the inside of the main jet hole looks clean enough to seal. Both posts are strong enough to hold a float. Not pretty, but I think it would work fine.

I had a post broken off in carb #1, drilled it out and put a pin in there, and JB welded it back on. Definitely was a problem that when once fixed, you're obsessive over making sure the petcock is closed. I used a $2.50 can of gumout to clean mine up, worked pretty well.

I second Bodi's observation.  As long as the main jet seals and all other passages are clear, "everything will be just fine". (Doc. Brown).

Wait!!! Don't go away!!!   :o

Did you cut the Gunk 50% with water, or use it full strength?? Did you heat it to just under a boil, and then let it soak overnight??

No dilution, straight in without boiling, and left the main body in overnight.  I didn't even really have a brush to use on it [I do now!], so the pictures there are the result from just rinsing it off.
