Weep Hole?
« on: July 23, 2007, 09:33:42 AM »
I am still fighting wet weather running on my 'matic.  The other day I was laying under it looking for possible water leaks when I noticed a weep hole in the points housing, not the cover.  It is located at the 7 o'clock position as you look at the housing straight on.  I grabbed out my Clymer manual and found one in a picture as well, just be be shure it was suppose to be there.

Anyway, I assume that if it can let water out, it can let it in so I siliconed it closed to see what happens.  I have the points cover sealed already, so I am not too worried about the thing filling up with water.

Anyone else ever do this or find that hole to be a problem?

I've never had a problem with water getting in........that's because I never ride in the rain.  I did however notice a similar hole, but wasn't too concerned.  If it got to be a problem, I would try enlarging the hole enough to stuff a hose in there, and run the other end of the hose to some place that won't see moisture, like under the seat or in the airbox.

Since you would be relying on gravety and not pressure to drain water/condensation out of you points chamber, the weep tube you propose can't be higher then the lowest point of the chamber itself.  Also any intrusions into the points chamber would have to be flush with or lower than the chamber floor.  Just not sure how you would get that all to work without some rather talented engeneering and the right tools.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

OldSchool mentioned the main reason for the hole ( I think).  Condensation.  With the hole blocked up you risk condensation building up and that's not good the points or anything else under there.  The position of the hole should keep water out during riding but allow condensation to escape.  Unless you plan on taking your SOHC through some deep water you shouldn't have to worry.

That would make sense to me, but I am down to grabbing at straws trying to keep this thing running when I get caught in damp weather.  I can ride through a mist hanging in the air and it will cut out.  I just keeps getting worse and worse.  I've tried resealing the air intake boots, ignition wires, coils, but have stopped short of wraping it up in a trash bag.  I know I'm missing something, so......

Check for arcing from the ignition wires to the frame, engine, whatever. I had this problem and new plug wires cured it completely, I could ride underwater now (maybe not). The HV end is always more susceptible to problems than the points wiring.

I'll look there again and see what I can find.  If I can get it up past 70, it seems to run OK in the rain, but that doesn't always work out real smooth.  I don't mind 70 on an open road in the rain with no traffic, but when other vehicles are around ::)

Bodi, did you swap out the coils and the wires or just wires?  If so what coils did you use?
