Man, good job. I live 1/2 mile from the Missouri River and have 2 boats. Anymore I spend more time on the water than riding. Looks great, you can be proud of your work.

Wow.. That is a great looking boat.

A friend and i just tore into a '64 Starcraft with a 70 horse Johnson outboard. This is the first boat either one of us have worked on. I'll have to post some pictures. Needs a new floor, but the transom appears to be in good shape. The motor ran when it was parked 18 years ago.

I love the Gulf Islands and really miss living in Port Townsend, WA... gotta love those inland waters.  Nice work on the boat, I'm glad you've been enjoying all that hard work.
+1000 on having a wife that rides and enjoys boating!  I hope her shoulder is okay!

Hey, Seaweb, wanna go fishin'? Let's go fishin'. I got a fly rod, casting rods, trolling rods, all kinds of gear. I'm Vancouver based with a 76 750F.
We could do Coho in October, there are spring around right now, but it's long odds on catching 'em. The Pink will start showing up in August - fun on light tackle and better than nothin'.

Let me know,

Well, I'm out of here for 3 weeks as of next Sunday for a ride to Sturgis, but I'm always up for an adventure.   It's a bit tough to troll at 50mph, but I'm sure we could make it work. ;)

Our guest room is always available to wayward bikers ;D

Gday Seaweb, i recently bought this for $1000, it needs the floor redoing but thats no problem as i have worked for a boat company before doing replacement floors and transoms. I plan on putting new stringers under the floor as well as putting a pod on the back for the outboard to free up some more room. Its a 15 footer.

My Dad worked in the boating industry all his life.

Yeah, they are a nice handling boat, very dry ride, Our waterways are similar to yours Seaweb, if you have google earth just search "Moreton Bay Australia" and you'll see what i mean. This boat is mainly going to be a fishing boat with the odd day cruise to the Islands..

I was trying to find that other boat resto thread from last year.  The search didn't work, and I can't even remember who it was that was doing it.  Any thoughts?

Never mind, I found it. Csendker hasn't checked in to the forum since July of last year.

You got the same motor as me Retro, 90 hp Johnson/Evinrude, mine pushes a 5.5 metre Haines Hunter Cuddy cab, planes real nice and no problem getting out of the hole since I fitted a hydrofoil to the tail of the motor.
V4's rock on the water. ;D

Geeze Hush, out of all the quality boat builders in NZ you picked an Aussie Haines, i am curious to know why?  Yep the old Johnson v4's are pretty good motors. Do you do much fishing mate? My inlaws live around Rotorua so i come over every couple of years, the brother in law is a mad keen fisherman so we always go over to whakatani and head out to the line of islands north of White island, nothing like fishing next to an active volcano.... ;D

Hang on a minute my Aussie cousin, Far Lap and vegemite and even the good old pavlova you can claim but Haines?  :D
Yes fishing is the reason we have the boat, mostly just around our local Hawke's Bay coast, plenty snpper, gurnard, kingfish, cod, kahwai (sea trout to you cousie) mackrel and as many sharks and barracudas as you want uugh. :D
"Roka" is a deep V Haines so rough water doesn't worry her, good job too cos we been caught out a few times when weather turned nasty on us.

Haines Hunter's boats are designed for Australian water conditions and manufactured in Australia by Australian craftspeople. We are an Australian owned company proud to be supporting the Australian economy.

Quote
The Haines Hunter brand name has been part of NZ's boating scene since the early 70's. Originally manufactured under license by Fibre Glass Moulders, Haines Hunter has been a market leader since that time, with a design philosophy based on the "Deep V " rough water ability and strength of construction.

Haines has been built in Australia for 46 years, my dad worked for Cruise Craft for 30 years from the mid sixties on and Haines were the main opposition. They were made under licence in NZ 17 years later but they are definitely an Aussie boat company..

I have caught some nice snapper, kahwai, kingfish, cod and a couple of very angry mako sharks. I go fishing every time i am over and will be again just after christmas early next year. My brother in law is a dive instructor so we usually end up with some nice crayfish or lobster {what ever they are called in NZ}. Might even have me some whitebait fritters... ;)
Sorry  for the history lesson.... ::)

Well I guess Aussie had to get something right eventually, and my old Haines ( boat is an 1984 I think and engine is a 1993) is testament to some good construction methods. :)

Oh yeah and while I'm at it, keep an eye out for my 33 year old daughter, she lives in Brisbane now. ;)

Actually I have to admit I'm not quite sure where she lives, a suburb called Teneriffe, have a picture of her apartment building and know she commutes using the ferries, she works for some enourmous superannuation company.
Funny eh, she's the only one in the family who doesn't wear a uniform and what does she wear to a fancy dress party..... ;D

Funny story. I will try and describe everything so you can understand the predicament I was placed in today.

I noticed last year a bit of water getting into the bottom hull through a small crack. Not enough to get under it and start a week long sanding glassing project, so I came up with a solution that worked fine until today.

Imagine the drain pug hole in the back of a boat.
Consider the size of a Honda 750 shock bushing. Now imagine taking a 1 ft piece of bicycle tube and putting that around the shock bushing and just squeezing it into the drain hole around the bushing.  Perfect fit!

Now tie a short string line from the end of the tube so you can set up the tube as a drain when it is hooked up correctly, and closes off when you pull it up.  Simple right?

Well .........1st day out on the boat today. I actually pulled my wife aside in the driveway and showed her where to hook up the looped string  when we were stopped or when we were in motion.

So We start off with the string in its high position crimping the hose, all is well.
We get going and I ask her to hook it up at the spot on the engine that lowers the tube so water can freely flow out.

I look back and see she has just thrown the string into the water !!!!!!!!  There is now enough room for the string to get caught in the prop and I immediately put it in neutral.  She pulls it out of the ocean and hooks it back up for the drain action. But there is an unknown problem now.

1/2 hour of bombing around no worries, then we slow down to cruise through a large marine area in Nanaimo so I ask her to pull / crimp the hose back up again. She reaches down and tugs and tugs but no go. It’s stuck on the motor. I am now in a 5 knot limited area and realize the hose is now allowing water to just fill the boat up.
The reason it was stuck comes from the the fact she had let it out free to get caught on the motor earlier.

I finally jump out of my seat to see what is holding it up., trimmed the motor all the way up and went to the back. When I saw the tube floating away from the boat I immediately realized we were now a sinking boat with just a hollow cb750  shock bushing with the hole in the drain !!!!

I jumped to the right side of the boat and reached down to my shoulder and stuck my finger in the drain hole.  I’m now the dutch boy holding the dike.

Yeah, good times. I am lying in the most uncomfortable position you can imagine, stretched out and my head is in the water with a finger holding back doom.  Time to think, and think clearly. I have 2 spare plugs in the engine well, but I have to figure out how to get the CB750 bushing out of there before I CAN GET IT IN.

I ask Kathleen to go into the tool box to find a slotted screwdriver, remove my shoes and empty my pockets, I know I’m going in.  The screw driver was one of those magnetic adaptor drivers. My fear was the dam end would fall off and I would be screwed. I only have one chance at this.  I HEAR A BIG MOTOR, but I can’t see anything so I ask if someone is coming along side to help or what?

They must have seen me hanging off the back of the boat with my head in the water.
They had a nice long single slotted driver , I slide over the side into the water and with a bit of prying I get the bushing out and replace with the stock plug.

Good times.
