thoughts on stainless steel fastners
« on: July 06, 2005, 10:07:02 AM »
hi all
any ideas about stainless screws and bolts as the screrws and bolts on the old girl have seen better days my thoughts are change all the philips headed ones for allen keyed ones (make life easeir) but my main concern is the high tensile bolts such as the engine mounting bolts and such. are stainless bolts strong enough?

thanks in advance for any info

From previous posts on this, most seem to feel SS is OK as long as it is not a high strength/torque situation. Apparently SS fasteners lack strength. Even so it is recommended that anti-sieze be used. You might want to do a search on the forum to read-up on the posts.

For the engine mounts, I'd stick with hex-head hardened steel.  Not because stainless isn't strong enough, but because you're unlikely to find the long bolts required for some of the mounts, and I think it would look better with all the mounting bolts the same.

hi all
its worth cultivating the freindship of a model engineer if you can find one any odd parts he can probably make up for you for the price of a pint or two also model engineers supply houses are useful for odd bits and pieces especially tools heres one of the better uk ones  http://www.chronos.ltd.uk

I love the hex head SS bolts, no leaks and they come out every time.  No hammer required.
These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.
