Scary thought... Winter Blues- what to do?
« on: July 25, 2007, 09:43:18 PM »
Man, what a depressing thought I had today. Last year i had my magna and I also had cm400T. The magna ran fine, but I was knee deep in girlfriend land so I didn't get a chance to really ride. As the summer came to an end last year my relationship did as well. At the time I worked for a business that owned storage facilities. I picked up the current love of my life- the 78 F2 and started to get her running a bit. Well, as spring sprung I found this forum and met Pete (pdpimp) who helped me get some fine tuning done on the girl. I've been taking extreme care and loving rides every day since. I also picked up a 69 cb350 & 72 350 that were not sort of running and one seized on me. They both run now and I'm looking at selling the two 350's off to grab another 750 to get going while I wait to find another sad 350 along the way.

LONG STORY SHORT...

I was thinking today on my ride (I know, FOCUS, MIKE, FOCUS) that this beautiful summer night is a luxury item here in MN. I also got laid off and no longer have a heated work space. I was terrified when I realized that I might get a case of the winter blues pretty hard this year. I was wondering what some of you other northern folks do with your winter time if you can't be out riding. It's a bit preemptive, but this is MN- winter is always right around the corner.

EDIT: this should have been in the open forum- sorry!

Winter is for wrenchin'.  If you have to do it in your bedroom, pick one of your stable and do what you need to do.

Sounds like I might have to have a serious talk with the room mate;)

Part of me is actually looking forward to winter (admittedly it is a VERY small part!) as this will be the first winter I have with a real workspace...I will finally be able to wrench on it properly without wasting valuable decent weather. I am getting my 750K back from my buddy who was in the process of buying it from me but then decided to get divorced instead...this may be the time I actually stick with it long enough to get it running properly!! Fingers crossed...I just hope with the increased mortgage payments I can afford to put a little aside for all the stuff it needs...like tires, brake overhaul etc etc etc...

That period of time, in the northern latitudes, when we are involuntarily forced to relax and contemplate the true meaning of life. ;)

That's what I'm trying to avoid! I usually spend a good chunk of my winter in the gym (avoiding such questions!) and in the summer I get chubby and relax. Prepping myself for my future occupation as a teacher I suppose. I lived in Oslo, Norway for a while and it was dark a majority of the winter and I was too healthy. An odd duck indeed.

i've worked on a lot of bikes inside the house... keep in mind, tire stores smell yummy, tires in the house smell like crap.  also, gas fumes are bad stuff man.  they creep along the floor in search of a spark... they smell like crap too.  if you've ever had any OSHA training you'll consider other options.

Winter The time of year when it is cool enough to don decent protective gear and go for a ride.

Seriously, I haven't ridden for two months (plenty of pillion stuff) because I dropped my bike and broke both elbows. The gearbox needs fixing before I ride again.

I might not live in MN, but here in Chicago the leaves are allready starting to fall from the tree (got one in the face on the Duke yesterday). What do I do int he winter months ? I buy parts, build bikes, and focus on the ladies to pass the time  ;D

I remember many years ago being in a middle of nowhere place in Norway, called Hackenshal I think, and asking one of the locals what there was to do there. He said "We fish, We F$ck and We drink". I thought oh ok. I asked him what it was like in the winter. He smiled and said "We  can't fish"   :-\

My bike can be repaired.
My insanity is a little more permanent.
