Front brake bleeder valve question - 500
« on: July 10, 2013, 05:12:49 PM »
I have a slight leak at the threads where the bleeder valve screws in. I added SS brake lines and bled system a few months ago. I just noticed the leak; I think it just started. Anyway, the bleeder valve is quite stripped so - I can't really tighten it up any more and I don't wan't to b/c it's so stripped. I have a new bleeder valve on order. To replace... I need to bleed the system, unscrew the old valve completely and then replace with new valve? And then refill/bleed system for use?

The bleeder valve is a harder material than the caliper.  Don't be shocked if.that doesn't fix your problem.  you could maybe tap and helicoiled  the caliper but if it doesn't work I'd look into a good used caliper rather that helicoil.

Yep, I would guess it's the caliper threads stripped.

Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

There is some fluid on the underside of the dust cap/top of the valve as well. I guess I don't 100% know if the leak is originating from the top (valve not tightened all the way) or the bottom threads (stripped threads), right? Since I have the bleeder valve coming I am going to start with that. Note that the leak is what I would consider very minor - just enough fluid to show up, not running down the caliper, etc.

If I replace the bleeder valve and still have the symptom... I don't have the tools or skills to drill out... wasn't there someone on here that offered a bleeder valve replacement service for stuck or broken valves?

It's not just a leak. It is a loss of braking pressure. It may/could result in a total loss of front brake. Yes I did see someone offering that service. I think bryanj had some thingies to fix that, maybe I'm wrong.

OK, thanks. My lever does feel (very slightly) softer. I also noticed that there was a slight front wheel drag (again, very slightly) when rolling the bike that was not previously there. All of this is related I assume. I'm still back to trying a new bleeder valve and then some type of caliper work if that doesn't resolve. Best to not ride at all until resolved?

I found the info on the member offering the bleeder valve repair service (in the Services section). I'll keep that handy if I need to go that route.
