Rectifier question wiring
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:39:24 AM »
Hey guys,
So the three wires that go to the rectifier. . . do they have to be in any particular order?

My cb750's starter would not turn over the other night after work (thank god for kick start) and so I had some time to take a look at her today. When I removed the fuse side cover I noticed that the wire loom that goes to the rectifier had signs of melted plastic underneath, I split the wires to find all 5 wires, the 3 yellow, 1 Red/white, and 1 Dark Green melted and shorting out amongst one another. So, long story short, I repaired the wires, but when I came time to solder the 3 yellow wires, I realized that I had no way of knowing which one goes where. I guessed where they go and the bike runs great, every thing's a go. The rectifier gets kind of hot, which I guess is normal.

So, then, does it matter where those 3 yellow wires are connected?

I forgot to mention that when I got everything back together, the starter still didn't want to start, and sounded feeble. But after riding my bike to work and back, I tried the starter and Viola! It worked!

Did the wires grounding out kill my battery and that is why the starter didn't work after I fixed the wires?

Huh?

It doesn't matter what order the yellow wires go.  I had the exact same issue with my bike--the connector was melted and some of the wires were actually stuck together inside it.

There are 5 wires to the rectifier. Wiring positions of the yellow ones doesn't matter.

The red and green very much do matter, as these are battery connections.  Polarity is quite important.
The green wire will attach to the frame at some point, and the entire length of this wire and it's attachment point should be carefully scrutinized, both for signs of heat damage, and clean sound connection quality.

These wires are part of the battery recharging system.  Of course they will effect the charge level of the battery when connections are awry.
