my CB550 build thread....finally back to work on it
« on: July 27, 2007, 12:49:21 AM »
Noob to the forum but not bikes.... I race motocross and built a CL175 about a yr ago to race the f160 class up here but racin two sports is to hard and expensive and motocross takes up all my time anyways so who knows what i was thinkin ... well i had alot of fun building the cl and riding it after making it street legal but i decided to build a cafe with more grunt. picked up this 1976 cb550f for just under 400 bucks. the wiring had went to crap and the bike had no power to anything. i went and hard wired the coils and it fired and ran good...so here's the build code name CR544..ha ... i'll update as i go

there was no way i could use the stock passenger pegs.... so i made some mounts that are a little lower and follow the lines of the frame better. if you notice both arms follow the frame...lowers follow frame cradle and the vertical ones follow the line of the frame meeting the back bone... they are just tacked in place right now

the rearsets started life as older fzr600 rearsets  so they'll fold. i was familiar with the mounting of these and they're dirt cheap on ebay so the total cost with metal and hardware of these cost me  $30 . i'll get a pic tomorrow of my sitting position ....they're perfect for me ... i'm 6'1'' so passegner pegs don't work cuz i'm in such a superman position

I like the looks of those rearsets... that is on the horizon for my project I just can't decide if I want to build from scratch or fit a set of CBR rearsets.

oh the joys and hates of working with foam and fiberglass..... here's a few pics of todays progress

checking my riding position and where i want my butt to be ....it'll be a littler higher once the seat is made up

seat foamed up and sanded and then covered in tape to pull it out once the glass is hardened...i know it's bowing but that's not a factor right now

covered in fleece waiting for its' first layer of ressin

and now i'm just waiting for it to harden so i can start to lay the inner layers

the tank is aluminum so I'm gonna paint the sides but  the top and knee indents will be sanded up to something like 4-600 grit to give a slight shine(i don't want it polished)... i like the fzr sets cuz it takes allot of fuss out of it ....the shifter linkage and clamp fit the Honda shifter shaft and all i do is extend the linkage by tapping a piece round bar and adding it to the stock linkage and I'm done although they don't look as period specific as yours they turned out how i wanted them

not much progress since last since i've been busy straightening this frame.... i can't beleive i didn't see this bend when i bought it becuase i was actually lookin for a tweaked frame. didn't notice it actually till lining up the tank ...... the two down tubes are tweaked and the cross member thing was really tweaked but the amazing thing is the neck wasn't to crooked.... so here some pics of how i straightened it.. lots of measuring, masonry twine, a bottle jack and chain i wish i would of taken pics before of how bent it was. lots of angles playin tricks here but i assure you it's straight in all the places it counts  since i've measured a thousand times

also here's a pic of everything mocked up... the seat looks huge here although it looks perfect to me in person it appears to big here in the pic
