Someone Stole my Helmet (REAL SOLUTION FOUND)
« on: July 27, 2007, 03:37:47 PM »
Another Rant:

No, I didn't leave a helmet on my bike unlocked.  I've seen Full Metal Jacket.  I know that without people who don't lock thiings, there wouldn't be theives.

I bought a Simpson Helmet from my favorite online place fleaBay, because of this forum.  Yall scared me into getting a full face helmet.  So it comes USPS and I know the mail carrier.  He is also a rider.  Anyhow, he was on vacation apparently and the temp mail carrier put my package on my porch.  The regular guy would never do that.  I have my bike with a cover on it in my front yard.  He always puts it under there because I live in a not so great neighborhood in DC.

It was like 3 weeks and I got nothing.  Then my neighbor says, "Some crazy homeless black guy took a box from your porch.  It was a big box.  We followed him and saw him take it out and put it in his bag.  I asked him if it was his and he said yeah."  So that's must of been what happened.

So now I'm left with my other cheap open face helmet.  If I don't post anymore, it's because I've split open my head cursing the bastard who took my helmet off my porch.  Damn eBay, temp mail carriers, crazy homeless people, uninsured mail, ghetto neighborhoods, and forums that suggest I get full face helmets.

End of rant.

What were the shipping arrangements? Sounds to me like the value would have required a signature. If you not there, you get a notice an know it's coming the next day so you can make arrangements. I'd go raze h_ll at the local post office.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

No matter what the carrier is, always insist on insurance.  You may not get your box, but you;ll get your money back.

Wow! Nice rant.

It really stinks when people steal your stuff. Around here in rural Vermont, I don't know if people are more honest, or could it be they all hear the many target guns shooting off every week from all the neighbors, but we don't have much in the way of problems with theft.
Usually.

Then I usually call Vinnie. >:(

Hope you had insurance on it.
Good luck.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

It's for this very reason I like my local UPS/FedEx carriers better.  I live in a pretty decent neighborhood but the UPS/FedEx guys always put packages in my back porch while the USPS guy leaves things on the front step in full view.

If that homeless dude is indeed mentally unstable, a quick ride around the neighborhood and you may spot him walking around wearing the damn thing.  Then again you wouldn't want it back if that were the case.  :-\

That's insane. You never actually got the helmet though, they lost it. Go back to the postoffice and yell at them. If that doesn't work you can probably find a crazy homeless guy to yell at them some more for a dollar.
Even if you didn't insure the package, you still have to sign for it right? They can't just leave it outside your house. If it's that simple i'm considering being a postdelivery guy..."Oh your package? I trew it out the the window, didn't you get it? "

Check with the seller and see if you paid for insurance. If it is file a claim. You have no proof it was ever there. They will not send the CSI team to invetigate.

My helmet was JUST DELIVERED! Been watching the tracking number all day... refresh... refresh... refresh..   DELIVERED! As soon as I saw it I called my brother up to head over and grab it off the porch. I literally read this post when I had just ordered my helmet online yesterday. It was just too much a coincidence for me to ignore.  ;)  So, I sent my brother over to fight off any helmet stealing crack heads in the neighborhood.  :o

It's what BROWN did for me. Left it on my porch. My brother nabbed it for me. Fits nice and tight. My first helmet... full face.

You city guys are going to void your bowels reading this.....I live in a rural area, when the post person delivers a package too big for the box, she will get out of her car and knock, if I'm not home, she will leave it INSIDE my door ( I don't even know where my house key is for the last 30 years)  Now, the best part,  Among my other hobbies is Civil War reenacting, and high power rifle shooting. Since my name is probably well known to the BATF goons I do all the ordering of black powder for my Civil War Organization, and have ordered surplus ammo for myself and others at the rifle club,   The UPS guy has never ask for a signature for anything. If I'm not home, he leaves it by the front door.  No, I don't have Mastiffs nor am I known as a unstable gun nut by the neighbors, but its just the way of doing things here. Am I gonna get nailed one of these days, probably.....but I hate to think my area being like what the rest of this country is turning into.

I live in a suburb of NYC and i get packages left by the door all the time. When I was dealing vintage stereo I would leave the stuff by the door for UPS pickup. I guess we are lucky to live in fairly safe places.

Doh!  I didn't even realize you weren't coolcat.  I'll never wear less than full face after the spill I took last fall.

bobsmith--actually that's kind of refreshing to know there are places like that.  I spent a few years in NYC; my one aunt there had I think 3 deadbolts on her door.  Also lived in LA and it took some time getting used to seeing bars on everyone's windows.  While there my Sunday paper was stolen regularly.
