Topic: new project bike (long term): Honda XL250

I picked up a 1972 (first year) Honda XL250 on Ebay the other day for $50. Granted it needs a lot of attention and parts, and probably a motor rebuild too, but I couldn't pass it up!

I am needing many parts, including a tank, clutch cover, exhaust, seat, etc. The frame is in pretty good shape and should look very nice after I sand blast it and give it a fresh coat of paint.

Fingers crossed on the condition of the engine.

       Hey Greg,  I had a chance to pick up on a couple of basket case XL250s sometime ago and would have too but, I got the chance to get a CB77 and the XLs had to wait and when I went back (later) to get them, of course they were gone. Story of my life.

Greg, what ever became of the blue 1976 XS650? You had a nice base there for a bike on the cheap. I really would love to have that engine and carbs.

Alas, that one had to go. I have too many projects on the burner as it is, and not enough room! The wife had been after me to unclutter the garage, so unfortunately, I was forced to sell it. 

I didn't mention that I also picked up a 1972 SL100 project bike. It is in about the same condition as the 250, and I paid $60 for it. But the guy threw in a class II trailer hitch free. Turns out it doesn't fit either my Jeep Cherokee or my Windstar van, so I sold it for $40.

Since I now have only $20 invested in the SL100, I may just keep that one around. If the wife complains, I can point out that at least these dirt bikes are smaller! 

By the way, where do you live Gordon? Are you in Texas too?

I want a classic Yamaha 650 Twin for a custom chopper project......don't tell me how much you sold it for, I'm liable to tear up.

My brother used to have an XL250 (72, I think). Actually, he and his buddy bought a pair of them from this guy that had bought them for himself and his brother. They were only, I think, two numbers off on the serial numbers.   

He and I both took our lincence tests on that bike (and both aced it, too).

When my brother took his test, one of the guys at the test told him that he had a bike just like it and my brother could have it for parts if he wanted it. My brother picked it up that afternoon. Last I knew it was still scatered around our dad's garage in peices with the frame somewhere in the wood behind the house. I'm pretty sure I could put my hand right on the muffler for it. If you would liek I could contact him and find out if he's willing to get it out of his garage.
