I got an old Jap 4 cylinder that I am going to need to register soon. Do I need a speedometer & turn signals to register it? I really don't want all that crap as I am going minimalistic bobber. Anything else I need to know? Thanks.

Although I'm not in CA I'm pretty sure you do from reading Carpy's site.  If NJ requires it than CA surely does also.  I have 4 bikes and haven't had any of them through inspection for years now and I've never been pulled over but other states may be more strict.

You probably do not need them to REGISTER it.....

However....

having them might help keep The Man off your back.

Happy trails.

After my bike not being registered with CA. DMV for over 11 years I was able to register it without a problem.  I haven't had a speedometer on my bike for over 2 years without a problem.  Then again I haven't been stopped either.   ;D  No inspection was necessary to get the bike on the road.  Just make sure you have all your paperwork including a bill of sale and you should be OK without an inspection.

What year is the bike?

California is very easy to register a bike with or without a title.

My bike came into California from Wyoming in April 04'. The DMV was very thorough about checking my paperwork and the numbers on the bike but there was no safety check (lights, horn, mirrors, exhaust, etc.) I would imagine this state will be the first to make life miserable for someone trying to register a bike once smog laws are enforced on bikes. At least our bikes should be exempt due to age but they might try to do a more strict safety inspection.............so far,so good!!!!!
