Got the news today
« on: July 26, 2007, 07:04:28 PM »
Aig has approved not one, but both surgeries for my ankle. Now I am just waiting for the big day #3. Two surgeries down, how many more to go? I am also in an argument with AIG about a powered chair to get around in since my shoulder won't allow me to use cruthes, a walker, or a manual wheel chair. My first operation had me in a wheelchair for 2 and a half months, the second only a few weeks, but this one could possibly put me in one for up to 6 months.

I'll also be looking into Clist for a powered chair, I might have to buy it outright instead of renting or getting one through AIG. We shall see.

More to come.....

The surgery is definitely your biggest concern so I am glad to hear it's sorted...now all we need is a member with a little vision and a welder to make Dusty a sohc powered scooter!! Step up boys.... ;D

Jeff,
Have a lawyer call them. It's amazing how fast an insurance company changes their stance when a good lawyer calls!

Don't we have any attorneys here that can help a brother out?

Great News about the approvals Jeff! ;) Hope you can get something going in the way of a powered chair now. :-\ You don't EVEN want to buy a NEW one. James, the "Special Needs' young man that I work with, got one and the cost (Medicaid paid for his) was listed at $10,000! :o ::) I couldn't believe it. You're in my prayers Jeff.

                                       Later on, Bill :) ;)

I just got off of Clist and even a used one that can handle my weight is going to run between $2500 and $2000, so yeah, I gotta convince AIG to go for it.

Even worse is the doc thinks I could be in the chair for up to 6 or 8 months. I'm gonna look like jabba the hut by then.

Thanks all for the thoughts and prayers.

lots of exercises can be done from a chair. Especially if you are going through rehab because they have some specialty equipment like those standup bike like things that you pedal with your arms...tried one once and could barely keep it up for like 45 seconds! I gained ALOT of respect for some of the athletes my buddy coaches in disabled sport that day!!!

That is great to hear! I know it will seem like forever being in the chair but if the surgeries work, it will be worth it. Do see about some lawyer if you can, it should help to get your chair.  As for the weight part, do the low-carb thing. Lots of veggies, some lean meat and just a little for carbs. It should help to control the weight since your mobility and exercise will be limited.

Dennis, That would be great if I could use my right arm, but that has been strained and dislocated so many times in the last six month I can't even lift it above my shoulder. I do stretching exercises and such but nothing gets my heart rate up to a good level for any length of time.

As for the weight part, do the low-carb thing. Lots of veggies, some lean meat and just a little for carbs. It should help to control the weight since your mobility and exercise will be limited.

As for the low carb diet, I have been on it for so long I forgot what bread tastes like. I let myself have a couple of small red potatos a few times a week and concentrate on squash and florette veggies such as cauliflower and broccoli. Actually, I have found that all kinds of veggies cooked up with the spices for corned beef turn out very well, everything from different kinds of squash, up to leafy veggies including several types of cabbage, iceberg lettuce, romaine, bok choi and even brussel sprouts.

The bad part is that my diet was so bad for so long that my metabolism went into hibernation mode and it's going to take forever to reset it.

Well then! ( salesman voice) You need to try the ALL NEW  #$%*-YOUR-PANTS  diet pill!!!!
Proven to make you stain your shorts while you lose weight!!

No seriously, there is some new diet pill out there and they may as well market it like that!

I hear you on the bad diet thing. Years ago I barely ever had money. I lived on cheese dogs and frozen burritos pretty much. I dont think you can get much worse than that.

Read, type with one hand, take courses on-line, get mad.  You won't get beat if you won't let yourself.  Don't deal with bad stuff- ignore it.  Do whatever it takes to get well.  A big part of it is in your head.

You have power in your head, Mr Man.

Ernie, do you know why I keep coming back to this site even though Rita is at a temporary standstill? People like you. People like Bill440. People like tBone, Bob Wessner, Glenn Stauffer, Geoff Springer, DusterDude, Proteal55, Lloyd, Lee, and every one else here.

Every one here is my Family. Every one here is my Brother and Sister. No matter where you are in this world, we will always be close in this forum, distance means nothing here. You have all helped me more than I can say by being here and accepting me into this massive family.

When I am down in the dumps and feeling all alone, I come here to be with my Family. I look forward to the day Rita is done and we can ride where-ever, when-ever. You fill my heart with hope when I feel there is none to be found. Just a few words from you go a long way to helping me cope with my frustrations with being so messed up. A lot of my frustration has to do with not being able to work. I sit around the house bored to tears for want of being able to do something that won't cause me pain somewhere.

I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of you being here when a Brother needs a shoulder or a helping hand.

Most Sincerely,

Jeffery D. Merrill

No thank you's required Bro! When my brother is happy, I am happy. When he's in pain, I too am in pain. You alone won't get through this cuz we're all on the journey with you! When a brother can't stand on his own it's our divine duty to hold him up tall and proud. We're the ones who are blessed to be your brother!

If I was on your side of the country Rita would already be home and on her way back together.

tbone, while you think that no thanks are needed, I feel just the opposite. You guys are great and I am glad that I have everyone here to chat with and help me get e grip sometimes. It means a lot to know that sanity is only a click away.

Bill, even if my ankle were to be amputated, knock on wood, I would still figure out a way to ride. Live to ride, ride to live, doesn't just apply to HD. ;D ;D

It was way cool meeting you last summer and was bummed that Rita had crapped out on you but now all this stuff is way more important.
