Like the subject title states, I'm experiencing a clunking noise during my 2 to 1 downshifts on my cb550.  It doesn't do it every time, but often enough to be a concern.  My clutch is adjusted properly and disengages like it should.  The clunking can be felt through the shift lever, until it finally shifts into gear.  Engine temperature also seems to have an affect, because it only does this when warm.

Any ideas?  Being my first bike, I'm not really sure what to look for.  I'm assuming either a worn shift drum or worn forks.  I've searched the forum without finding anything conclusive.  Thanks in advance!

Changed your oil lately?  Believe it or not, it helps.

If better oil doesn't solve your problem, then it is possibly clutch plates that don't remain flat when warm and cause drag.

The oil is fresh, 10w50, I believe, whatever the manual stated.  I changed it about 3 weeks ago.

I assume, based on these two responses, that worn shift drum/forks are unlikely?

Don't assume that based on my response.   I don't know how likely it is that you have worn shift drum/forks.  I was just hoping that you needed to freshen up your oil, as that is the easiest/cheapest fix sometimes.

Good luck
