It's been done. I've done it. You may need to trim the two mounting pegs in the frame to get the tank to slide on but it will work. The other issue is length. The seat needs to be trimmed or moved back slightly for the bigger tank to fit. Looks wise, I like a big tank so I think it's cool. I had a 750k tank on my old '76 550 with a slightly smaller stepped aftermarket seat and it just fit. I recently helped a friend put a 750F seat on his 550 and it was quite a bit too long. We had to change the brackets on his aftermarket cafe solo seat to get it to work. Awesome when done, though.

Here's a pic of a CB750 tank on my CB450 --->

Anything can be made to work, just a matter of if it is worth the time/effort/etc...

my bike has a 750 f tank on a 500K1 frame (avatar). I had to shorten the seat pan by about 2 inches in the front, and I made a new way for the tank to secure to the frame in the rear. I just ground the horns down for the tank fit up front and shortened the rubbers from the back so they would fit.

I'm running accel coils which are wider than stock but they fit fine.

Hi!

Thank you all for your answers!

I would LOVE to have this item on my cb 500/4 but it's designed for the cb750 and I don't know if it's possible to make it fit:

460 Euros and 90 euros for the "Aero 400 fuel cap"

I am not as cheap as a bastard to not spend that kind of monay! But getting the tank done, paying it, not be able to return it (as it's a one off piece) and realizing it's not possible to fit it to the bike would be to much for me!
Just the tought of this beauty sitting in my shed and not going to be put on the cb500/4 breaks my heart!

best regards
Peter

If it will fit a 750, it will fit a 550 if you cut down the front mounting studs on your frame about 1/4". I ran a 750F tank on my 550 with no issues (see avatar and below), you'll just have to come up with a rear mount, since the tank will be too long for the stock one. Will also put you in the market for a new seat, if you're not already running a cafe seat on your ride. There are several other posts on this, do a search, some are more detailed than others, but I know I've posted this info a few times!

What about a 550 tank on a 750???

Hard to say, the front mounting cups on the tank will be too wide (the 750 front mount is too narrow for the 550), but the big problem will likely be the 550 tank is shorter. Not sure how much shorter off the top of my head, its at least a few inches, which may cause the rear mount to interfere with the backbone on the frame before the tank sits down all the way...
