From working on cars, it will smoke a little.  You might also have a little leak unless it smokes when the exhaust is hot and the bike is off.  You can normally tell by how it smells, if it is chemical smelling then it is paint.  If it is oilly, or a gas type smell then it is an exhaust leak.

Did you paint a factory exhaust or an after market exhaust? Did you use a high temp paint? If it is not a high temp paint it will be smoking and burning off all the time.  If the pipe was a factory chrome pipe and wasn't preped right it will burn off as well.

Dupli-color makes a great rattle can made for 1200°F applications. And if you go to their web site the instructions require a 300 or 350 (don't remember) oven pre-cure to burn off the non-ceramic base paint and set the ceramic based paint. They even make a high temp primer that makes sure you have good adhesion on a clean surface.

You have to define hi temp paint.. Putting 500 degree high temp paint on the header up by exhaust flange will burn off pretty easy. Using that same 500 degree high temp paint on the rear part of the header will hold fine becuase it doesn't see those excessive temps.
You would need 1200 degree paint up on the header by the exhaust.
