I'm not much of a Christian but I don't know why Scientology uses a crucifix in their logo.

Members of a religion are not exempt from paying taxes.

Only the religious orginization is exempt.

The members using infrastructure are (I hope) paying thier taxes.

Some religious orginizations do in fact perform social work and do fine things.

Not to split hairs too much, but a crucifix contains the image of Jesus Christ on the cross.  The Scientology symbol contains a modified cross.  Probably an attempt to "legitimize" through association with Christian religions.  I'm sure many Christians see that logo and are quick to assume that Scientology is based on Christianity.  Personally, I feel that it is deceptive, as Scientology appears to me to bear no resemblance to Christianity.

I lived 6 blocks from th headquarters in Clearwater for 5 years.

The main problem with Scientology seems to be their tax status. They're classified as a church, and pay no taxes. They also claim they are not a religion, but a way of life. They also earn billions of dollars a year, through book sales, auditing classes, and real estate ventures. Ridiculous amounts of untaxed income. They owned most of downtown Clearwater, and were in the process of doubling the size of the headquarters building. It covered 2 city blocks. Most members give LARGE amounts of their income to the church.

Most of downtown Clearwater was crawling with churchgoers. There would be 300 people with matching shirts standing on a corner, waiting for a light to change. They'd wander around, and never spoke to anyone. Ever. Very creepy. Of course, anyone who prays to an alien named Xenu probably wouldn't be much fun to talk to anyway.

I've seen their building in Los Angeles, but I guess the Scientology Mecca is Clearwater, Florida.  Next time I'm in Florida, I'm curious to check the place out.
Bingo    Theyre main resort and many other buildings are in downtown clearwater. There is a unmarked motel of them less than 1 mile from my house in clearwater?
Odd bunch if you asked me? :o

I have been a Freemason for 19 years and I continue to practice my own faith. To be an Mason you need to ask to join, the Scientolgists recruit young people and program them. I have met a few that got out it is pretty creepy.
