Are the felt seals on the main linking throttle shaft necessary and if so where do i get em or is there a simple fix without pulling the carbs apart?

The felt seals keep out dust. And while not absolutely needed for operation, they keed out said dust which will grind down the shaft which is probably not replacable.

OK if you want to replace them go to your local Auto Parts with one of the original Seals and ask to look thru the Air Conditioner O rings. They will be Green Oil Resistant Silicone I think. There should be a Size in there that will work for you.If they are the Same as the F2 Carbs. ??? the ones that Fit mine were for a Hitachi A/C System I think. ;)

I take it that you have Keihin carbs. The dust seals keep out dust which can cause wear. I replaced mine with "O" rings. Be careful to choose a size that does not produce too much drag on the shaft. While you are at it check the dust seals on the choke shaft. If they are worn out unfiltered air will be sucked in to the carb duct and into the motor. These can be replaced with "O" rings as well. Again, choose a size that does not cause binding on the choke shaft. The choke shaft has a light return spring and any binding will cause the choke to stick closed. Pat from Aust.

Ok, I definitely nominate this for a FAQ listing - when I took my carbs apart the first (dozen) times, I destroyed some of the felt bushings, and got lucky by finding another bank of carbs to cannibalize.  If I'd known they were only dust seals (what else would they be, but hey, it was my first attack) , I'd have figured something else out!

That info was not to be found on the old greenspun board for luv or muney!

Well I thought the first one was a piece of the family pet hair collection getting in my soup.

Is there a rope gasket plumbers put in faucets that would do the same thing?
