Looking for riding gear, and I'm picky and cheap
« on: August 02, 2007, 07:32:41 AM »
I'm about to pick up a pair of gloves on ebay that I like, I have a jacket that I picked up locally used, it's a pretty pricey one that I managed to walk away with for $100, but I'm not wild about the style.  It's like this one - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAND-NEW-JOE-ROCKET-SUPERMOTO-SIZE-44-30-OFF_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6750QQihZ019QQitemZ290145181529QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW except no blue, it's black except for the white accents.

It's growing on me but I'm looking for a nice looking leather jacket that doesn't scream biker that has hard armor.  I saw almost exactly what I want at a local Yamaha/Victory dealership, it was Victory branded but otherwise was a nice looking jacket with a back pad and shoulder and elbow protection.  It was $350 , which is more than I want to spend but it was also the only one I've found that I really liked.  Does anyone know of any other jackets out there that fit this description?

I'm afraid that, for the most part, you get what you pay for.
There's a website a lot of people like... "nearly new" or something like that.

Check out www.newenough.com.  They've got overstock and last year's styles for very reduced prices for many different brands.  I picked up my Joe Rocket Meteor4.0 for under $45 shipped about a month ago.  Good deals all the way around and fast, very reasonable shipping.

Good luck

I picked up a PowerTrip TT jacket from them(too large, warm and I wasn't paying attention - it had foam armor and I really like the idea of the hard stuff) as well as a pair of Hein Gericke Engineer boots(also too large, leather seems flimsy, I'm thinking about looking for something in an engineering style but with ankle protection etc.

My biggest gripe right now is finding something in this style.   I've been tempted to pull the trigger on this ebay store - http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MEN-MOTORCYCLE-CRUISER-LEATHER-ARMOR-JACKET-TOURING-XL_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6750QQihZ014QQitemZ330151895474QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW  but I don't like that I can't see it in person/on a person and that it's not a name brand.  I still need to find some overpants as well, but those I can get anywhere.  Finding a leather jacket or textile jacket that I can wear on a hike or into a crowd that doesn't scream biker is tough.

Try your local thrift or pawn stores.

I recently bought an Olympia Ventura jacket.  It's got foam armor, but it's a fantastic looking jacket if you can find one.  It's discontinued now, but I've seen them on the internet for super cheap comparatively.  They listed for $369, I got mine for $189 at the local BMW/Ducati/Triumph dealership.  It's the only armored jacket I've ever found that I've liked.

I think this might be the one I saw in the store, although I think it looked better in person

It just seems that only the only jackets that are armored, look like they belong on a sportbike, not a cb.  The jacket I have is comfortable, it breathes and protected me in my fall

Suzuki makes some that are VERY similar to what you're describing except that it has a logo on the upper part of the back.

I was looking at leather jackets and liked the looks of the Joe Rocket Twist.  A little bit of money though at $314 at chaparrel.

keep an eye on NewEnough's ebay auctions.  I got last year's model of the Cortech Coaster jacket (which wife and I quite like) for $60 plus $10 shipping.  can't beat that for a deal for an up-to-date jacket.  I've worn it now for about 6000 miles, and quite like it.
