So I've booked us some cheap flights to Orlando for Jan 2008 and will be renting a house from www.floridasunvacationhomes.com (amazing deals - 2 families in a 3000 square foot house with a private pool etc. etc. etc. for $180 a night total).

I've found www.eaglerider.com which will rent me a Harley 883 Sportster for $75 a day + $25 insurance, with unlimited miles :D  Thinking about renting for a day trip.  Will be riding on my own.

Anyone near Orlando?  Anywhere good to ride?  Good roads up and down the coast by any chance?  I'll ride forever, and actually think renting a Sportster might be kind of fun.

Damn, Tintin, Birmingham's too far away from Orlando.  Otherwise, we'd ride together.

i went a few years ago and had a great deal of fun... if you can cough up the cash you can drive Nascar style cars w/ 600+ horsepower at the disneyworld speedway.  we got about an hour of instruction and 8 or 10 laps by ourselves in a car while following the lead car up to 120mph... after you get thru that day and want more you can move up a notch and they take you faster the next time... i think there are 3 levels.  i've only done the first level and it was a thrill.  i never knew driving a Nascar was so labor intensive but, they don't drive like a mercedes or lexus.  it was about 800 dollars per person    :o

make sure to watch the disneyworld fireworks over the lake!

Cool website Tintin...  Looks like a cooler idea for a vacation than sitting on your ass on a cruise ship all day!

That depends on waht you think a good road is. The Florida peninsula is a big swamp, and the highest hill is about 20 feet. The roads tend to be ruler straight. Just don't end up in a ditch, those are full of alligators! From the Tragic Kingdom you have a few choices. The most fun would be a trip to the Keys, that road is pretty cool. Buzzing over to Tampa is OK but the whole area's basically a mostrous old-age home. Running the Bee-Line to Cocoa Beach and seeing the rockets at KSC is a nice day trip but the Bee-Line is well named, if you want to see a curve it is not for you.

And watch out for the armadillos that litter the highways, especially at night.  It seems like the swamps are teeming with them.

I know it's a long way off, but when you get back, let us know how the house was.  Going in another year, and that looks like a great option.

Thanks for the website.

My family stayed in a house in Kissimmee with a pool and hot tub when we went there.  $600 for the week, 5 bedroom house, full kitchen and grill...  About a 20 minute drive from the park.  It was awesome!

Of course we also went in November of 2001...  Everyone was still afraid to fly at that point, so I will likely never see Disneyworld so empty.  The longest line we had to wait in was only 5 minutes!  ;D  ;D  ;D

I second the Don Garlits museum, definitely a worthwhile stop.

I live in Orlando. Maybe if you rent the bike you can go to some of the local bike events. Unfortunately, they seem to be subdivided according to what you are riding. The crotchers go to one, the hogs to another, and the tourers to yet another. I have to choose the correct bike to match the event!  ;D

Daytona bike week is March 2-11, 2007.....might need to come a little later.  ;)

I just returned from a week in Orlando. We had a wonderful time. It's been quite a while since I've been there. We split our time between Disney and Universal and still missed plenty. We found our rental at:

http://www.vrbo.com/.

It was so nice having a home instead of a hotel room. We were shower dodging much of the week. I suppose I'm grateful it wasn't hurricane dodging.  ;D  Here is something to consider if you decide to rent the Harley. We passed a few of these signs without incident:
