What is 'sandcast'?

I see it mentiioned for parts...carbs, shocks...etc. but I doubt it refers to the build method.   ??? ??? ???

The first 7414 or so CB 750s in 69 had rougher engine cases.

They were made by permanent mold, but have same appearance as sandcast, so are referred to as such, along with the rest of the bikes parts .(some of these parts are uniquely sandcast, some fit for a few years)

After that the cases were diecast, which has a much smoother appearance.
