Carb mounting plate strip
« on: August 07, 2007, 10:29:41 AM »
I am stripping a set of 750 F1 carbs, non accelerator pump type.  I want to remove the operating torque bar that runs through the main carb mounting plate in 2 places and also through the carb top operating forks.  The forks just unbolt and are then free to slide,  but the 2 positions on the carb mounting bracket appear to have a plug or similar fitted.
Can I drill these out and then replace them on rebuild? Or is there another trick?

It just drives out from one side. Watch for the woodruff keys that are in the arms.

I can't look at the parts till tomorrow as they are at work.  You sure we are talking about the same bit 'essess'.  It looked to me like the bar was held in position in the bracket at 2 points, with a pin or similar that is finished flush.  This I presumed was to keep it all central.  However, I will have another look tomorrow.

Thanks

Well, I cant remember anything like that. You want to take the shaft out the the forks that lift up the slides are mounted to right? I remember it was a little difficult to get out. My carbs where in pretty bad shape. I will look tonight also to confirm. Maybe someone already removed said pins from mine.

OK 750essess
Job done.
I drilled out a pin or bearing (metal was very monkeyish) using a 2mm drill bit see photo.  This holds the bar in position.

I may use spacers to rebuild as its easier if I ever need to strip again.  See photos.  These will keep it all in the correct position.

Thanks again

Yeah mine had already been removed. You could tap that hole and put a set screw in it.

Yeah you could, but 4 washers is so much easier, with just a very small amount of end float for free movement.  I also picked the woodruff keys off the floor!

Washers are good too. Make sure that shaft moves freely or will never idle the same speed twice, been there done it. i wish mine were that clean.  :D

Not bad for about 20 years in a Saudi scrap yard.
I have stripped, cleaned and examined one of these F1 engines, and am into the rebuild.  Cases have been painted (and cooked in the oven), APE studs fitted and a heavyduty cam chain.  All new seals fitted, just missing the main oil seal between the cases not supplied in the Dave Silver kit.  My mate is going to take the barrels over to the States for reboring (836) and new pistons etc:  I am just stripping, cleaning and examining the carbs to see if they will be usable, or I might have to save for a set of CR's.

WOW, those are probably the most worn out looking 750's I've ever seen  :o I have used that seal over again without any issues.

There are some more F1 and K7 CB750's at this yard and also some GS750's.

The great thing about the engines is that despite years out under the sun the 2 that I have stripped, show little signs of high mileage.  They all had damaged or removed points, (probably low speed accidents), this effectively stopped them running, and little had been done to repair them, so it looks like they had just had their clocks smashed and then been thrown off a lorry into the scrap yard.  There is no wear detectable inside the engines, even the cam chain tensioner bolts were still at there original factory position on the slider. (Cam chain never adjusted).  here is a photo of the Cases ready to be rejoined on the bench, the paint on the externals is Barbeque silver from ACE.  My original paint was confiscated at Aberdeen airport UK, so I have no real choice.
I know the o-ring would be probably fine, but all other seals are new so I will be picking up a few bits and the seal in Sept on my Holidays.

Do not try to drive the shaft out the wrong way. The woodruff keys will ruin the bushings, break the plate, and break the forks. (I did it this last weekend!) :( ::)
