Dropping Helmets?
« on: August 07, 2007, 12:56:45 PM »
OK, I know how much a drop can damage a helmet...enough to make it unsafe even if the outside shell looks ok.  But I was walking into the bank today holding my helmet by its strap at my side, and it slide out of my hand and hit the ground on top, bounced once, and I caught it before it hit again.  I dropped it onto concrete from MAYBE 2 and a half or 3 feet up.  It did no damage except a tiny bit of pitting on the shell from the rough concrete.  Could this have seriously damaged the helmet?  Have you/how much have you dropped your helmet?

I mean, I appreciate the offer, but I think I can handle it! ;D It's black and silver, to match my bike.  A nice new Z1R Strike helmet that Motorcyclist rated so highly.  Hopefully I won't need it.  I was just really pissed because this is the second day I've actually had the helmet, and I dropped it.

If you're looking to get a helmet, and want a good one that's not expensive, I really recommend the Z1R.  It's pretty comfortable, very good looking, has a nice finish and quality feel to it, and comes highly rated.

Rocking-M, I have to ask: In your profile is Blue Ridge referring to Blue Ridge region, as in the Blue Ridge mountains?  I live in the Shenandoah valley, right smack in the middle of the Blue Ridge!

From that drop height the only damage that will have been done is a) to your ego and b) to the external finish of the helmet. Don't worry about it..

wow!  none of the "if you value your head" arguments yet?

i try to carry mine by the fullface shield as opposed to the strap.  (the part that covers the chin and lower face)  i've noticed i have less trouble hanging on to it by a fixed portion of the helmet instead of the strap.  i just open up the visor, stick my hand in there and grab on for dear life.

i hate dropping helmets.

It should be ok.. as long as your head wasn't in it at the time.

My new (patent pending) helmet design offers complete protection against such mishaps.

Happy trails.

You ever done something; tripped, fell, stumbled, dropped zigzags at the DMV, and the first thing ya do afterwards is look around to see who else saw you do it? I think your helmet hittin the concrete on its top like it did, with that unique POP sound would have the same effect......  8)
